Kruk Joins Sunday Night Baseball Booth

ESPN announced today that John Kruk will be leaving his studio analyst post to become a member of the broadcast booth for Sunday Night Baseball, joining Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser.  Kruk replaces Terry Francona, who left after one season to become the manager of the Cleveland Indians.

Kruk has done fill-in game analyst duty in the past, but has primarily been a studio analyst since joining ESPN.

“It’s a real honor to work with Dan and Orel, and to be front and center on baseball’s biggest game of the week,” said Kruk. “When I was asked to join the team, I couldn’t have been happier.”

“Kruk has every attribute that makes an analyst great.” said Mike McQuade, ESPN Vice President, Production, “He’s intelligent, he’s opinionated, he brings a ton of personality and his track record at ESPN speaks for itself.”

“I always admired the way John competed on the field, and every time I’ve been on Baseball Tonight with him, I’ve been impressed with his depth of knowledge about the game,” said Sunday Night’s Orel Hershiser. “Now I’m looking forward to sitting next to him every Sunday Night.

“Krukkie is funny, knowledgeable and passionate about baseball,” said Dan Shulman. “I think he and Orel will make a terrific analyst combo in the booth, and I can’t wait for the three of us getting started.”

East Coast Bias? No. Business Bias. Sox/Yanks Bring Big Numbers for ESPN

Much is made about how ESPN selects it’s games for Sunday Night Baseball, with many lamenting that ESPN tends to select teams from big markets in the east.  But you can’t argue that these teams bring big ratings numbers to the network.

Sunday night’s Yankees/Red Sox match-up earned ESPN a 3.5 rating, the highest MLB rating for the network since 2007.  By the way, the 2007 rating of 4.2 was also for a Red Sox/Yankees game.

Overall for the season ESPN’s ratings for Sunday Night Baseball are up 9% over 2010.

I often don’t like all the match-ups put forth by ESPN.  But I realize these games are not set for the fans.  They are set to maximize revenue for the network.  Don’t expect this to change.

Hershiser to Join ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Booth

ESPN baseball analyst anf former Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser will be joining Jon Miller and Joe Morgan as the third voice in ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball booth this season.  Hershiser replaces Steve Phillips, who served in the role for the 2009 before being let go by the WWL last fall.

From ESPN PR:

“Sunday Night Baseball distinctly offers Jon’s Hall of Fame voice and the combination of Joe’s Hall of Fame approach to hitting and Orel’s profound pitching knowledge,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production. “Collectively, they will provide compelling analysis and debate during our national game of the week.”

In addition to his Sunday Night responsibilities, Hershiser will continue to serve as analyst during ESPN’s College World Series and Little League World Series coverage. He will also provide analysis for Baseball Tonight. Hershiser most recently provided analysis for Monday Night Baseball in 2009, and has contributed to Wednesday Night Baseball.
