Sports Media Digest- April 9, 2013

NBA Basketball this Week on ESPN and ABC–  ESPN will have a NBA double header tomorrow night and will produce the NBA game Sunday on ABC.  Tomorrow at 8:00p.m. ET Mike Breen, Jon Barry and Doris Burke will call the Nets at Celtics.  At 10:30p.m. ET the Spurs take on the Nuggets with Dave Pasch and Hubie Brown on the call.    On Sunday at 1:00p.m. ET Breen, Burke and Jeff Van Gundy will call the Bulls at the Heat.

Baseball this Week on ESPN–  ESPN will have two Major League Baseball games this week.  Tomorrow night on ESPN2 at 7:00p.m. ET the Yankees take on the Indians with Dave O’Brien, Aaron Boone and MArk Mulder on the call.  ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball returns with weekend as Dan Shulman, John Kruk, Orel Hershiser and Buster Olney call the Orioles at Yankees at 8:00p.m. ET.

Notre Dame Football Coach Brian Kelly Next SiriusXM Town Hall–  SiriusXM Radio has announced that its next Town Hall sports interview will feature Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly.  SiriusXM’s Notre Dame Town Hall with Brian Kelly will air on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 91 Thursday, April 18th at 6:30p.m. ET. The Town Hall broadcast will be moderated by former Notre Dame football great Tim Brown.

Sports Media Digest- April 8, 2013

NBC Sports Network has Good First Quarter–  NBC Sports reported today that the viewership for the first quarter on the NBC Sports Network rose 14% over the same period last year.  NHL games were up 58% over 2012 while MLS action was up 8%.  The Dan Patrick Show viewership was also up 58% over 2012.

Floyd and Cora Join MLB Network–  The MLB Network has announced that Cliff Floyd and Joey Cora have joined the network as baseball analysts.  Floyd will debut Monday, April 15 on MLB Tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET and Cora will make his MLB Network debut onMLB Tonight on May 6.

Ben Crenshaw the Focus of this Year’s Jim Nantz Remembers–  This year’s Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta on CBS will look at two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw. Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: Ben Crenshaw at the Masters will air Sunday at 1:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular Also Features Golf this Saturday–  Prior to CBS’ coverage of the Masters Saturday CBS Sports Spectacular will produce two golf-centric programs.  At 1:30p.m. ET CBS Sports Spectacular will televise the Speedgolf World Championships from the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon.  At 2:00p.m. ET Jim Nantz hosts Masters Playoffs, looking back at the 16 playoffs that have been contested through the years at the Masters.

SiriusXM Radio at the Masters–  SiriusXM Radio will provide comprehensive coverage of this week’s Masters tournament.   Live hole-by-hole coverage begins 2:00p.m. ET Thursday on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, channel 93 for XM subscribers and channel 208 for Sirius Premier subscribers. Leading into the play-by-play, John Maginnes and Matt Adams will host a special Masters preview show Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm ET.  Immediately after the conclusion of each day’s play, Adams will host Masters Review, giving listeners a full recap of the day’s action.

Edwards to Rejoin ESPN Racing Booth for Three Races–  ESPN has announced that NASCAR driver Carl Edwards will return to the booth for the next three races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.  Edwards will join Allen Bestwick and Andy Partee for races April 12th, April 26th and May 4th.  Edwards made his debut in the ESPN booth last year, calling Nationwide Series races at Darlington Raceway and Kentucky Speedway.

Street Joins Fox Sports as 2014 Olympic Analyst–  Fox Sports announced today that Olympic gold medal downhill skier Picabo Street has joined FOX Sports as an analyst for the 2014 Winter Games from Sochi, Russia.  Street will provide analysis of all women’s and men’s skiing events, as well as contributes daily commentary prior to and throughout The Games across all of FSMG’s platforms including FOX Sports 1, FOXSports.com and FOX Sports Radio.

Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions Reach Deal for Boxing Programming– Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions have reached a multi-media rights extension to televise exciting live boxing in the United States and internationally.  The new multi-year agreement keeps Golden Boy Promotions’ bouts with Fox Sports for years to come, and helps establish a new Monday night boxing franchise on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), Fox Sports’ new, national multi-sport cable channel launching on Aug. 17.  Golden Boy Promotions was founded by 10-time World Champion Oscar De La Hoya.

SiriusXM Radio’s Coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament– SiriusXM Radio will be broadcasting every game of the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament. Action can be heard on Sirius channels 91, 92, 93, 94 and 85 and XM channels 91, 190, 191, 192 and 85. Tournament match-ups and SiriusXM channel assignments will be available at www.siriusxm.com/collegesports starting Monday, March 18.

Strong Viewership Numbers in February for Big Ten Network– The prime time ratings during the month of February on the Big Ten Network (BTN) was the best ever for the network.  Fueled by Big Ten college basketball, the numbers were up 20% over February of 2012 and up over the record ratings the network experienced in January.

Fans to Determine Greatest Play in NFL History Through Bracket Tournament on NFL.com–  NFL fans can vote for the greatest play in NFL history through a bracket-type exercise on NFL.com.  The 64-NFL play bracket is comprised of 41 offensive plays, 13 defensive plays, seven special team plays, and three plays in which an offensive player performs a defensive act. Eleven Super Bowl plays are among the field selected.  Fans can start voting on the round of 64 on Monday, March 18 at nfl.com/bracketology. The Championship round will conclude on Monday, April 8 when the greatest play in NFL history will be crowned.

NASCAR Sprint Cup from Bristol on Fox-  The next stop in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series will originate from Bristol Motor Speedway and be telecast on Fox this Sunday.  Pre-race coverage begins at 12:30p.m. ET with Chris Myers and Darrell and Michael Waltrip.  Darell Waltrip will join Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds in the booth for the call of the race. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits for reports on teams and pit while Jeff Hammond serves as the roaming reporter.

Fox Soccer to Telecast CONCACAF Gold Cup–  Fox Sports has announced that Fox Soccer Channel will be the home to the 25 matches of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.  Coverage begins July 7th with a double header from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Fox Soccer has Premier League Twin Bill Sunday–  Fox Soccer will telecast a pair of Premier League matches this Sunday.  The opener kicks-off at 9:00a.m. ET with Fullam at Tottenham.  Chelsea and West Ham will battle at 11:30a.m. ET.

Boxing Saturday Night on HBO–  HBO Sports will produce another World Championship Boxing telecast Saturday night at 10:15p.m. ET featuring Timothy Bradley Jr. VS. Ruslan Provodnikov and Jessie Vargas vs. Wale Omotoso.

Fran Charles Joins MLB Network–  The MLB Network (MLBN) announced today that long-time sports anchor Fran Charles is joining the network.  Charles, who has had stints on the NFL Network, USA and HBO, begin his new job on World Baseball Classic Today this Saturday, March 9th following Second Round action of the World Baseball Classic  from Tokyo, Japan, which begins live at 5:00 a.m. ET.

NBA Action This Week on ESPN–  ESPN will air a single NBA game Wednesday and a double header on Friday.  Wednesday at 9:00p.m. ET the Bulls take on the Spurs with Mark Jones, Jon Barry and Heather Cox at the mic.  Friday’s action begins at 8:00p.m. ET with the Hawks at the Celtics with Mike Tirico, Jon Barry and Chris Broussard on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET the Rockets take on the Warriors with Dave Pasch, Jeff Van Gundy and Lisa Salters.

Adam Schein To Host Show on Mad Dog Radio–  SiriusXM Radio announced today that Adam Schein will host a weekday show on the network’s Mad Dog Radio Channel, SiriusXM channel 86.  Schein on Sports debuts next Monday at 10:00a.m. ET.

Rich Gannon Joins Bruce Murray on SiriusXM NFL Radio–  SiriusXM Radio also announced the hiring of former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon to join host Bruce Murray on a new show on SiriusXM’s NFL Channel, channel 88.  The pair will debut on The SiriusXM Blitz beginning next Monday at 11:00a.m. ET.

NBC Sees Viewership Gains with Hockey Day In America Telecasts–  NBC Sports reported today that its third season of its Hockey Day In America telecasts were a viewership success.  The second game of its doubleheader on NBC (Kings/Blackhawks) was up 31% compared to last season, while NBC Sports Network’s evening game (Capitals/Rangers) was up 200% vs. a comparable 2012 game.

Pioli Joins SiriusXM Radio– SiriusXM Radio has announced that former Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli has been gired by the network as a football analyst.  Pioli will make his debut as an analyst during SiriusXM NFL Radio’s coverage of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis from February 21 through February 24.  SiriusXM NFL Radio channel can be found on channel 88 with Sirius and XM Premier.

NFL Network Invites Fans to be Part of Run Rich Run–  The NFL Network is asking fans to run the 40 yard dash with host Rich Eisen.  Eisen has been running the dash in his suit for years and NFLN is asking fans to videotape their runs in their work uniforms.  The best and worst videos will be featured on-air Tuesday, Feb. 26, during the NFL Combine coverage on NFL Network …just before Rich’s run.

Friday Night Fights on ESPN–  This week’s edition of Friday Night Nights on ESPN will feature an IBF Title fight between current Junior Welterweight titlist Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KOs) and former Junior Welterweight titlist Kendall “Rated R” Holt (28-5, 16 KOs) in the 12-round main event.  Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas have the call with Todd Grisham as pre and post fight host.

Fight Night Returns to NBC This April–  NBC Sports announced that its Fight Night Series will return to the network on April 20th.  Kenny Rice, Freddie Roach , B.J. Flores and Chris Mannix will call the action beginning at 4:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular this Sunday–  CBS Sports will present Bikes and Bulls at this Sunday’s CBS Sports Spectacular telecasts.  The action begins at 12:00p.m. ET as Frank Frederick narrates a mid-season review of the Monster Energy Supercross series.  At 1:00:p.m. ET CBS will telecast the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Invitational from Kansas City.

NBA Doubleheader on TNT–  Off of its success during the All-Star Game, TNT returns Thursday with its scheduled doubleheader.  AT 8:00p.m. ET the Miami Heat take on the Chicago Bulls with Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, and Craig Sager on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller, Chris Webber and Rachel Nichols will call the San Antonio Spurs at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Darryl Hamilton Joins MLB Network as Analyst–  MLB Network announced today that former major league outfielder Darryl Hamilton is joining the network as a baseball analyst.  Hamilton will make his debut calling two games at the 2013 Urban Invitational tournament at in Houston this Saturday, February 23rd with MLB Network’s Paul Severino, Joe Magrane and Sam Ryan, beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Super Bowl XLVII the Focus of final NFL Turning Point–  NBC Sports Network produces its final NFL Turning Point for the 2012 season with a look at the key plays from Super Bowl XLVII.  NFL Turning Point, hosted by Dan Patrick, airs tonight at 10:00p.m. ET.

Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson to Call /Hoosiers Spartans Hoop Game–  ESPN has announced that Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson will serve as analysts with Mike Tirico when the network telecasts the February 19th college basketball match-up between Indiana and Michigan State.  Tip off is 7:00p.m. ET.

BTN Sees Highest January Prime Time Ratings Ever–  The Big Ten Network (BTN) reports that its prime time ratings for the month of January were the highest ever for the network.  BTN’s average primet ime men’s conference basketball rating was 0.87 in the network’s eight metered markets.  Among all national sports networks for the month, BTN trailed only ESPN in its eight metered markets.

Former College QB’s to Compete for Spring Invite on MLB Network Reality Show–  The MLB Network is producing a reality show where former college football quarterbacks John David Booty,Josh Booty, Doug Flutie, David Greene and Ryan Perrilloux will be taught to throw a knuckleball with the possibility of being invited to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Spring Training camp.  Kevin Millar and Tim Wakefield will host The Next Knuckler, which will premiere on February 13th at 9:00p.m. ET.

Actor Wuhl to Host Fantasy Baseball Show on SiriusXM–  SiriusXM Radio announced today that comedian and actor Robert Wuhl will host a new weekly fantasy baseball show on SiriusXM’s 24/7 channel dedicated to fantasy sports.  Off the Wuhl, hosted by Wuhl and Casey Stern, will debut tonight and air live every Wednesday night (9:00-11:00 pm ET / 6:00-8:00 pm PT) on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio (XM channel 87 and Sirius channel 210 with Sirius Premier).

NASCAR Now Returns to ESPN–  With the NASCAR season set to begin soon, so will ESPN’s presentation of its NASCAR Now program.  The seventh season of ESPN2’s news and information program will begin Friday, February 8th, at 3:00 p.m. ET with a program originating from the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.  Allen Bestwick will host the NASCAR Now Hall of Fame program, joined by analysts Dale Jarrett and Ray Evernham.  Mike Massaro, Nicole Briscoe, Marty Reid, Shannon Spake and Bestwick will be ongoing hosts of NASCAR Now again this season, with ESPN SportsCenter anchors Lindsay Czarniak and Jonathan Coachman also occasionally hosting.  Ricky Craven will continue as an analyst for NASCAR Now with regular contributions from Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Evernham and analysts Andy Petree and Brad Daugherty. The daily NASCAR Now show will resume on February 11th.

Jacksonville Jaguars Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew will be on Radio Row to host his SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio show, Runnin’ with MJD, live on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm ET and again on Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 pm ET (channel 87 on XM and channel 210 on Sirius Premier)

Former NFL kicker Benny Ricardo will host a special bi-lingual Super Bowl preview show from Radio Row on Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm ET on ESPN Deportes Radio (channel 149).

The Jay Thomas Show, featuring the Emmy Award-winning actor and New Orleans native, will air live on Radio Row on Friday from 2:00 to 3:00 pm ET on SiriusXM Stars Too (channel 104)

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy will host a live Blue Collar Radio special airing live from Radio Row on Friday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm ET (channel 97).

SiriusXM’s Covino & Rich, hosted by Steve Covino and Rich Davis on SiriusXM Stars Too (channel 104, weekdays at 11:00 am ET), will broadcast from spots around New Orleans, including the Maxim Party and Radio Row, and create special features capturing the party feel of New Orleans during Super Bowl Week.

Award-winning journalist Bob Edwards will present a series of New Orleans-themed specials on his daily SiriusXM show throughout Super Bowl Week that will showcase the city and its celebrated musical heritage.  Edwards’ shows will be highlighted by interviews with renowned musicians Dr. John, Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas and more.  Edwards will also talk with New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu about being the Super Bowl’s host city and the quick turnaround for Mardi Gras. Airs weekday mornings at 8:00 am ET on SiriusXM Public Radio (XM channel 121 on XM, Sirius channel 205 with Sirius Premier).

Additionally, from Saturday, February 2, through Super Bowl Sunday, SiriusXM listeners can tune in to a special limited run channel for regular traffic and weather reports for the New Orleans area (channel 142).

On Friday, February 1, SiriusXM will launch “Radio New Orleans” on channel 67 featuring New Orleans music founded on the roots of jazz; everything from Louis Armstrong and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Dr. John and Trombone Shorty. The channel, produced in conjunction with renowned New Orleans community radio station WWOZ, will air through Sunday, February 3.

Sway Calloway will host Sway in the Morning, his live weekday show on Eminem’s Shade 45 channel, from Radio Row on Thursday and Friday at 8:00 am ET (channel 45).

Maurice Jones-Drew and Sway will also team up Friday on Radio Row for a one-hour special airing from 1:00 to 2:00 pm ET on Shade 45.

SiriusXM Hits 1’s The Morning Mash Up, NicoleRichStanley T. and Ryan, will be interviewing guests on Radio Row during their Friday broadcast and at the NFL Experience at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on Friday and Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm ET.
