WatchESPN App for IOS Gets Major Update

ESPN announced today that its WatchESPN IOS application for iPhones and iPads has undergone a major upgrade.

In addition to watching live feeds from ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU and ESPN Goal Line/Buzzer Beater, the app has new enhancements- including what’s called Live Toolbar, which presents stats, scores and ESPN.com on-demand clips – all while still viewing the streaming video.

“The catalyst for this latest update to the WatchESPN App was content discovery and interactivity. Video is at the very core of what ESPN does best, and the addition of scores, stat and robust highlights and clips complement the fan viewing experience,” said Damon Phillips, Vice President, WatchESPN & ESPN3. “Through constant innovation, we’re able to serve fans not only with what they want right now, but with what we anticipate they’ll want in the future.”

The new app is available today from the IOS App Store.

ESPN FC Sees Significant Growth In its First Year

ESPN FC is celebrating its first anniversary by touting its traffic numbers online.

ESPNFC.com is averaging 5.1 million unique visitors per month, making it the no. 1 soccer-specific site in the U.S.

The anniversary coincides with the debut of ESPN FC on ESPN2 in the U.S., which airs its one-hour editions on Sundays at 12 a.m. ET and 30-minute editions on weekdays at 5:30 p.m.

Rotoworld to Become a Fantasy Football Information Brand on NBC Sports Radio

NBC Sports and Rotoworld,  the internet’s highest-trafficked fantasy sports information site, have struck a deal where the website will bring exclusive fantasy football information to listeners of NBC Sports Radio.

Brian Kenny Rounds Out NBC Sports Radio Weekday Radio Line-Up

NBC Sports Radio and Dial Global have announced that current MLB Network and Showtime host Brian Kenney will serve as its mid-morning host when the network launches its 24/7 line-up on April 1st.

Kenny, who has also worked at ESPN, will host the 9:00a.m.-12:00p.m. ET time slot.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the team at NBC Sports Radio and Dial Global and I am excited to be back on the airwaves.” said Kenney,  “We look forward to building a show that fosters intelligent sports conversation with in-depth analysis. It’s going to be a blast.”

Cowboys and Dolphins to Play in Hall of Fame Game–  The NFL announced today that the Dallas Cowboys will take on the Miami Dolphins in the traditional Hall of Fame game to kick-off the 2013 NFL pre-season.  The game will take place Sunday, August 4th at 8p.m. ET and air on NBC.

Scruggs to Host Voices of the Game Middays on NBC Sports Radio– NBC Sports Radio has announced that weekend sports talk host Newy Scruggs will host a 12:00-3:00p.m. ET weekday show beginning April 1st.  Voices of the Game with Newy Scruggs will feature a recognizable sports “voice” during the entire second hour of the show. Personalities will include Chipper Jones (Tuesdays), Stan Van Gundy (Fridays), Bobby Valentine (Thursdays) and Chris Mannix (Wednesdays).

NBC and Golf Channel Prep for Arnold Palmer Invitational–  NBC Sports and the Golf Channel will provide blanket coverage of this weekend’s PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational.  The networks will devote nearly 80 total hours of news and tournament action, which includes 22 live hours of tournament coverage on NBC and Golf Channel.  The Golf Channel will have first and second round action Thursday and Friday beginning at 3:00p.m. ET.  Third and fourth round coverage on Golf Channel begins at 12:30p.m. ET while NBC takes over Saturday and Sunday at 2:30p.m. ET. Golf Broadcast teams will include Rich Lerner and Frank Nobilo (Golf Channel), and Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller (NBC). For telecasts on both networks, Gary Koch and Peter Jacobsen will report from tower positions, while Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay will walk the course. Steve Sands will conduct player interviews. Jimmy Roberts will be around for the weekend.

Sports Media Digest- March 15, 2013

Donovan McNabb and Mark Malone to Co-Host Radio Show on NBC Sports Radio-  NBC Sports and Dial Global announced today that former NFL stars Donovan McNabb and Mark Malone will co-host the afternoon drive show on NBC Sports Radio beginning April 1st.  Under Center with McNabb & Malone will air between 3:00-7:00pm ET Monday-Friday.

ESPN Preps for NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Selection Show–  ESPN will have exclusive coverage of the announcement of the 64 teams in the 2013 NCAA Women’s College Basketball Championship this Monday.  The NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Presented by Capital One airs Monday at 7:00p.m. with Kevin Negandhi, Kara Lawson, Carolyn Peck, Doris Burke and Rebecca Lobo.

NBC Sees Record Ratings for WGC-Cadillac Championship–  NBC Sports reports the viewership for last weekend’s WGC-Cadillac Championship were record setting.  The Golf Channel had a 1.5 rating for the second round on Friday, making it the most-watched second round in the history of the tournament. Final round coverage on NBC earned a 3.7 rating, up 33% from 2012.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel Returns Next Week–  The latest edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel will air on HBO Tuesday night at 10:00p.m. ET/PT.  Among the topics will be a profile of former boxing champion Mike Tyson; the stroy of transsexual college athlete Gabrielle Ludwig; a look at how extreme are Extreme Sports; and an update on Olympic track star Lolo Jones.

ESPN to Provide Multi-Platform Coverage of U.S. Men’s Soccer–  ESPN will provide coverage across its varied platforms of two U.S. Men’s Soccer FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.   The first match takes place next Friday, March 22, with USA vs. Costa Rica at 10:00 p.m. ET outside Denver, andthe second on Tuesday, March 26th, in Mexico City, with Mexico vs. USA at 9:30 p.m. ET Both matches will be aired live on ESPN and WatchESPN with Ian Darke, Kasey Keller and Alexi Lalas have the English-language call.

Sports Media Digest- March 11, 2013

Kuselias to host Morning Show on NBC Sports Radio–  NBC and Dial Global announced today that Erik Kuselias will be the morning drive talk show host when NBC Sports Radio launches its full time schedule on April 1st.  Kuselias had been host of the weekday 7:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. slot.  That program time will now be filled by Sunday morning host Jon Stashower.

Acta Joins ESPN– ESPN announced today that former Major League manager Manny Acta has joined the network as a baseball analyst.  Acta will appear on a number of ESPN programs; including Baseball TonightBeisbol Esta NocheSportsCenter and other studio programming. He will also contribute to ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes Radio. Acta served as manager of both the Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians.

NBA Double Header Wednesday on ESPN–  ESPN will produce a NBA double header this Wednesday night.  At 8:00p.m. ET the Utah Jazz take on the Oklahoma City Thunder with Dave Pasch, Hubie Brown and Heather Cox on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET Mike Breen and Jon Barry have the call of New York Knicks at Denver Nuggets.

NASCAR Nationwide Series this Weekend from Bristol on ESPN– The next stop in the NASCAR Nationwide Series will take place this Saturday from the Bristol Motor Speedway.  Alan Bestwick will be joined by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree for the call of the race while Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry Punch and Vince Welch report from the pits.  Action begins at 1:30p.m. ET with NASCAR Countdown with Nicole Briscoe, Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty.

HBO to Produce Road to Rios/Alvarado II–  As part of its continuing series to go behind-the-scenes of upcoming boxing matches, HBO Sports will produce its latest Road to series leading up to the second fight between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado.  Road to Rios/Alvarado II will debut this Saturday at 12:15a.m. ET/PT.

Sports Media Digest- January 28, 2013

Terry Francona to Join Bob Costas Wednesday on MLB Network–  The next edition of Studio 42 with Bob Costas will feature an interview with former Red Sox and current Indians manager Terry Francona.  The interview will air Wednesday at 9:00p.m. ET.  MLBN will air a second Studio 42 with Bob Costas Thursday at 9:00p.m. ET as Costas sits down with David Robinson, son of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson.

Tim Brando’s Radio Show Shifts to Sirius XM Radio–  Sirius XM Radio announced today that The Tim Brando Show will now have an exclusive home on its network.  The show had been part of Yahoo! Sports Radio.  The program will begin airing on Sirius XM College Sports Nation, channel 91, beginning next Monday at 9:00a.m. ET.

McNabb Added as Major Contributor to NBC Sports Radio-  Dial Global and NBC Sports have announced that former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb has been added as a regular contributor on NBC Sports Radio.  McNabb will appear on the network beginning this week at the Super Bowl and will also be part of a new soon-to-be-announced Monday-Friday show to be launched on April 1st.

ESPN Announces Next Two 30 for 30 Film Releases–  ESPN has scheduled the debut for the next two films in it’s 30 for 30 documentary series.  Survive and Advance, from director Jonathan Hock , will debut on March 17 at 9:00p.m. ET and looks at Jim Valvano and the ’82-’83 season of the North Carolina State Wolfpack.  Elway to Marino, from NFL Films and director Ken Rodgers, will debut on April 23rd at 9:00p.m. ET and offer an in-depth examination of the 1983 NFL Draft  that was highlighted by a record six quarterbacks being taken in the first round, including future Hall of Famers John Elway and Dan Marino.

NBA Action this Week on ESPN-  ESPN will have NBA double header action this Wednesday and Friday.  Wednesday at 8:00p.m. ET the Heat will take on the Nets with Mike Breen, Hubie Brown and Chris Broussard.  at 10:30p.m. ET Dave Pasch, Jon Barry and Heather Cox will cal the Lakers at Suns.  Friday at 7:00p.m. ET the Heat are at the Pacers with Mark Jones and Jon Barry.  Terry Gannon, Chris Mullin and Heather Cox will call the Lakers at Timberwolves at 9:30p.m. ET.

NBA TV to Present Mid Season Report Card-  NBA TV will produce a program this week looking at the 2012-2013 NBA season at the mid-way point.  Midseason Report Special on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. ET. Rick Kamla and Dennis Scott (analyst) will be joined by NBA.com writers Steve Aschburner, Scott Howard-Cooper and Sekou Smith to review all the grades and assess each team. NBA TV insider David Aldridge will also contribute to the show.

U.S. Men’s Soccer vs. Canada-  ESPN2 will have coverage of the first match featuring the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team this year.  Glenn Davis and Taylor Twellman will have the call with sideline reporter Mónica González.  Alexi Lalas will provide halftime commentary.  Kick-off is tomorrow night at 9:00p.m. ET

NFL Network Replay Schedule–  The NFL Network (NFLN) will look back, as well as ahead, at the NFL Playoffs by replaying games from this past weekend as well as match-ups featuring playoff teams from earlier this season.  Tomorrow at 8:00p.m. ET NFLN will replay this weekend’s Seattle at Washington Wild Card game.  At 9:30p.m. ET the network will re-air the week 14 match-up between the Texans and Patriots.  Wednesday at 9:00p.m. NFLN will replay yesterday’s Colts/Ravens contest.  Thursday at 8:00p.m. ET the network will play the week one match-up between the Packers and 49’ers.

ESPN NBA Double Headers Wednesday and Friday-  ESPN will have two NBA double headers this Wednesday and Friday.  Wednesday at 8:00p.m. ET Dave Pasch, Jon Barry and Chris Broussard will call the L.A. Lakers at San Antonio Spurs.  At 10:30p.m. ET Mike Breen, Doris Burke and Lisa Salters will be on hand as the Dallas Mavericks take on the L.A. Clippers.  On Friday at 8:00p.m. ET Mike Tirico, Hubie Brown and Chris Broussard will call the Chicago Bulls at N.Y. Bobby Valentine Joins NBC Sports Radio–  Our good friend Richard Deitsch at Sports Illustrated had the story this morning, and it became official earlier today…Former Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine has been hired to serve as a baseball analyst for NBC Sports Radio.  Valentine will call-in to network affiliated talk shows and also be a co-host on a new weekday program which will debut in April.

ESPN2 to Produce Baseball Hall of Fame Special–  ESPN2 will be the home on the ESPN family of networks for special coverage of baseball’s Hall of Fame election announcement.  Karl Ravech, Barry Larkin, John Kruk, ESPN MLB Insiders Buster Olney, Tim Kurkjian and Pedro Gomez and ESPN senior writer Howard Bryant will respond to the announcement Wednesday beginning at 3:00p.m. ET.

Messi to Appear on Premiere Edition of 60 Minutes Sports on Showtime–  International soccer star Lionel Messi will be featured as CBS’s 60 Minutes Sports debuts this week on Showtime. Bob Simon hosts the segment Wednesday night at 10:00p.m. ET/PT.

Jimmy Roberts to Host New Golf Channel Show Beginning in March–  The Golf Channel announced today that 13-time Emmy Award winner Jimmy Roberts will host a new program in the network beginning March 12th.  Play with Jimmy Roberts will chronicle stories ranging from celebrities to everyday people who are all unified by the sport of golf.

NBA D-League Coverage on CBS Sports Network–  Beginning tonight the CBS Sports Network tonight will provide coverage of the NBA Development League at the D-League Showcase in Las Vegas.  The opener at 10:00p.m. ET will feature the Springfield Armor and the Reno Bighorns.  Tomorrow at 10:00p.m. ET the Los Angeles D-Fenders meet the Idaho Stampede.  Jason Knapp and Alaa Abdelnaby call the action.  CBS Sports Network will also provide coverage of the NBA D-League 3-Point Shootout and the NBA D-League Slam Dunk Contest Thursday at 7:00p.m. ET.

Welcome to a new year of Sports Media Weekly programs.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I begin the show discussing a report by Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated that Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis will be joining ESPN as an NFL analyst once he retires at the end Baltimore’s playoff run.

We spend some time looking at ratings numbers as the networks begin to look back at their successes of 2012..

We then recount the horrific accident which fell upon ESPN anchor Hannah Storm over the holiday break.  She returned to work New Year’s Day hosting the Rose Bowl Parade on ABC.

We finish our segment looking at the official national launch yesterday of the CBS Sports Radio Network

Staying with sports radio our guest this week is Anita Marks, who will be starting a new nationally syndicated weekend sports radio show on the NBC Sports Radio Network.  Anita talks about what listeners can expect from her Saturday and Sunday broadcasts beginning at noon ET.  She also fills us in on her experience hosting sports radio in Baltimore; her role with the New York Giants; and her love for fantasy football.

NBC Sports Radio Fills Out Weekend Programming

Sports Media Digest- November 5, 2012

First NFL Flex Scheduling Moves Colts/Pats, Leaves SNF in Place–  The first week of the NFL’s flex scheduling has been announced for week 11.  The only change in the original schedule is a change in time of the Colts/Patriots game on CBS from 1:00p.m. to 4:25p.m. ET.  NBC will retain its originally scheduled Sunday night game between the Ravens and Steelers.

CBS Announces SEC Match-Ups for Next Two Weeks-  CBS Sports has announced its slate of SEC football games for the next two weeks.  CBS will have a double header this Saturday beginning at Noon ET as Arkansas takes on South Carolina.  Tim Brando, Steve Beuerlein and Marty Snider will be on the call.  At 3;30p.m. ET Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson, and Tracy Wolfson will call Texas A&M at Alabama.  Saturday, November 17th CBS will televise LSU at Ole Miss at 3:30p.m. ET with Lundquist, Danielson, and Wolfson on the mic.

NFL Films, Travel Channel Collaborate on Behind-the-Scenes Look at Browns Road Trips–  The Travel Channel and NFL Films are collaborating on a new series looking at the behind-the-scenes preparations of the Cleveland Browns on its road trips during the 2012 season.  The series will look back at the Browns on the road for games against the New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers.  NFL Road Tested: The Cleveland Browns debuts December 4th at 10:00p.m. ET on the Travel Channel.

NBC Sports Network to Simulcast The Dan Patrick Radio Show–  Even though Dan Patrick announced the news last week, NBC Sports officially announced that the Dan Patrick Radio Show will now be simulcast on the NBC Sports Network.  The program began airing today and will do so weekdays from 9:00a.m. to Noon ET.

MLB Network To Provide Exclusive Coverage of BBWAA Awards-  The MLB Network (MLBN) has announced that it will have live exclusive coverage of the unveiling of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) post season awards. The winners of the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, Manager of the Year and Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year awards exclusively on MLB Network from Monday, November 12 to Thursday, November 15.  Greg Amsinger will host with analysts Larry Bowa, Al Leiter, Dan Plesac, Harold Reynolds, Bill Ripken and Tom Verducci.  MLBN will also have the announcement of the five finalists for each award at the BBWAA Awards Finalists Show this Wednesday, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

New ESPN Radio Program Debuted Today–  ESPN Radio debuted a new program today, Coach & Company, featuring ESPN studio anchor Jonathan Coachman.  The 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. ET program replaces one held by Doug Gottlieb, who left for CBS Sports Radio earlier this fall.

Stan Van Gundy Joins NBC Sports Radio as Analyst– Dial Global and NBC Sports have announced it has signed former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy to serve as a NBA analyst for the NBC Sports Radio Network. Van Gundy will call into network shows each week during the NBA season. He will talk exclusively to NBC Sports Radio affiliates and co-host for an hour every Friday during the NBA season.
