Sports Media Digest- May 30, 2013

Golf Channel Celebrates Most- Watched May in History–  The Golf Channel registered 16.9 unique viewers in May.  The daily average of 133,000 viewers is 19% over 2012, making it the most-watched May in the history of the network.  The network also reported it is expected to show record numbers for May as well on Golfchannel.com.

ESPN Sees Strong Viewership to Start WNBA Season– The Memorial Day doubleheader of the WNBA gave ESPN an average rating of 0.3 and an average audience of 366,000 viewers.  The nightcap,  Chicago at Phoenix on ESPN2, was the most- watched WNBA game since July of 2004.

Pro Football Talk to Unveil Each NFL Club’s Mount Rushmore–  Mike Florio and Pro Football Talk on the NBC Sports Network will produce a special series  “Faces of the Franchise; Who’s on Your Team’s Mount Rushmore?” — to determine the four most influential people in the history of each NFL team.  The special premieres this Monday at 5:00p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

NASCAR Sprint Cup this Weekend on Fox– Fox Sports wraps-up its coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunday afternoon from Dover, DE.  Coverage begins at 12:30p.m. ET with pre-race action hosted by Chris Myers with Darrell and Michael Waltrip.  When the race begins Mike Joy calls the action alongside analysts Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds while Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits for reports on teams and pit stops. FOX Sports’ Jeff Hammond serves as the network’s roving analyst.

Jemele Hill To Become Co-Host of Number Never Lie–  ESPN has announced that Jemele Hill will serve as co-host of the afternoon program Numbers Never Lie with Michael Smith.  Hill will begin her new role next month.

Fox Sports Tabs Dallman as Fox Sports 1 News Director–  Fox Sports announced today that it has promoted Bill Dallman, a longtime executive at multiple FOX owned-and-operated news stations, hto serve as Vice President/News Director for FOX Sports 1.  Dallman will begin in his role on July 1st and will work with affiliates and Fox Sports Regional networks in managing the news-gathering operation and overseeing the editorial format of Fox Sports Live when it launches on August 17th.

CBS’s Coverage of The Memorial–  CBS Sports continues its coverage of the PGA Tour this weekend with the telecast of The Memorial Tournament from Dublin, OH.  Coverage on Saturday begins at 3:00p.m. ET while on Sunday action gets underway at 2:30p.m. ET.  Jim Nantz,and Sir Nick Faldo call the action from the 18th tower  while Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole and Gary McCord at the 16th hole.  David Feherty and Matt Gogel serve as on-course reporters.

NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 4 Number 1 Program on TV–  Turner Sports reports that last night’s game four of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers had a rating of 5.1 and an average audience of 8.1 million viewers, making it the number one prime time show for the night on television (cable and broadcast).  The rating was 26% higher and the audience 24% higher than the network’s coverage of game four of the Western Conference Finals last year.

Costas Looks Back at the Freeh Report on Costas Tonight–  The next edition of Costas Tonight on the NBC Sports Network will feature Bob Costas looking back at the impact of the Freeh report on Penn State athletics and the family of Joe Paterno.  Costas Tonight will air tonight at 11:00p.m. ET following the network’s coverage of game seven of the NHL Western Conference semi-finals between the Red Wings and Blackhawks.

CBS Produces Golf Special Featuring Golfers and their Dads–  CBS Sports is producing a one-hour special looking at the special bond golf has played between fathers and sons.  PGA TOUR 2013: Golf’s Dads talks with PGA stars and their connection to the game with their fathers.  The program debuts this Sunday at 1:30p.m. ET.

Motorsports Schedule this Week on NBC Sports

NBC Sports Network will produce 13 hours of motor sports coverage this week with the Formula One™’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Leigh Diffey will be the lead announcer with analysis from former racecar driver David Hobbs and analyst Steve Matchett, a former race mechanic for the Benneton F1 team. Will Buxton will be the on-site reporter.

Fox Sports Names Highlight Show Anchor Team for Fox Sports 1-  Fox Sports announced today that it has hired former Canadian sports anchor team of Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole as the primary highlight team for Fox Sports Live, Fox Sports 1’s flagship news, opinion and highlights program airing nightly at 11:00 PM ET.  For the last five years the duo has been the anchor of TSN’s SportsCentre, Canada’s most-watched sports news program.  Onrait and O’Toole.  Fox Sports Live premieres in conjunction with the network’s launch on Saturday, August 17th.

Next SEC Storied Documentary to Premiere May 15th–  ESPn has announced that the next in its series of SEC Storied documentaries will debut Wednesday, May 15th, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.  Abby Head On chronicles Abby Wambach’s soccer career thus far, from winning a national title at Florida to her rise as a U.S. women’s national team star only four goals away from breaking Mia Hamm’s all-time international scoring record.

NHL 36 Returns to NBCSN Looking at the Blackhawks–  NBC announced that it is working with the NHL to again produce NHL 36 a documentary series focusing on a player or team in the league. NHL 36: Chicago Blackhawks is a two-p[art series looking behind-the-scenes at the Chicago Blackhawks.  NHL 36: Chicago Blackhawks debuts tomorrow night on the NBC Sports Network following the Blackhaws’ playoff game with the Minnesota Wild which begins at 9:30p.m. ET.

NASCAR Nationwide Series this Weekend from Darlington on ESPN– The next stop in the NASCAR Nationwide Series will take place this Friday night from the Darlington Motor Raceway.  Alan Bestwick will be joined by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree for the call of the race while Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry Punch and Vince Welch report from the pits.  Action begins at 7:00p.m. ET with NASCAR Countdown with Nicole Briscoe, Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty.

Emotional Bruins Return Receives Strong Numbers for NBCSN

NBC Sports reports today that last night’s NHL game on the NBC Sports Network between the Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins, the first home game for a Boston-based team following Monday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon, received strong viewership numbers.

From NBC PR:

 NBC Sports Network’s Wednesday Night Rivalry telecast featuring the Buffalo Sabres against the Boston Bruins resulted in record-setting regular-season viewership.

NBC Sports Network’s coverage of the Sabres dramatic 3-2 shootout victory against the Bruins on Wednesday night, drew 847,000 viewers and peaked at more than 1.1 million viewers.

• The telecast was the fourth most watched single regular-season game in NBC Sports Network history and was up 84% vs. NBC Sports Network’s 2011-12 exclusive time period average.

• NBC Sports Network was a top 10 cable network for the 7:30-10:15 p.m. ET time period among M18-49 (No. 7) and M25-54 (No. 8).

NBC Sports Network’s 13 Wednesday Night Rivalry NHL games have averaged 662,000 average viewers up 49% above NBC Sports Network’s 2011-12 Wednesday night exclusive game average.

• Through 49 games, the NHL on NBC Sports Network has drawn 415,000 average viewers, up 25% from last year’s full regular season average (332,000).


In Boston, Sabres-Bruins on NBC Sports Network received a 7.9 HH rating, which was the third highest-rated regular-season Bruins game ever on NBC Sports Network (behind Boston’s two games vs. Montreal this season 9.26 on 3/3/13 and 8.51 on 3/27/13).

• The game was up 77% from the Bruins’ 2011-12 regular season average on NBCSN in the market.

• NBC Sports Network was the No. 1 rated network overall in Boston during the 7:30-10:15 time period.


In Buffalo, Sabres-Bruins on NBC Sports Network received a 9.0 HH rating and was the No. 1 rated network overall during the 7:30-10:15 time period.

NBC Sports Extends its Partnership with the Bayou Classic–  NBC Sports announced today that it has signed an extension to continue to televise the Bayou Classic, the annual college football game between Grambling and Southern.  The new agreement calls for NBC to televise the game through 2015.

Customers of Comcast, Cablevision, Suddenlink and Verizon Fios Can begin Streaming the NBC Sports Network–  NBC Sports announced today that programming on the NBC Sports Network can now be streamed via the network’s NBC Sports Live Extra product for customers of Comcast, Cablevision, Suddenlink and Verizon Fios.  The first event to be streamed is tonight NHL contests between the Penguins and Lightning.  Additional cable, satellite and telco providers are expected to be added soon.

Two MLS Games this Weekend on NBC Sports Network- The NBC Sports Network will televise two Major League Soccer matches (MLS) this weekend.  Saturday at 7:30p.m. ET FC Dallas hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy.  Sunday at 10:30p.m. ET the Portland Timbers will host the San Jose Earthquake.  For both games Arlo White, Kyle Martino and Russ Thaler will be on site.

Real Sports Returns Tuesday on HBO–  The next edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns to HBO Tuesday at 10:00p.m. ET.  Among the topics this month:  a look at an Egyptian soccer team instrumental in the toppling of the government of Hosni Mubarak; a woman looking to make a NASCAR Sprint Cup pit crew; a talk with the President of the Miami Marlins; and a special New York-based boxer.

NBA Double Header Tomorrow on TNT–  TNT resumes its Thursday night NBA double header tomorrow night.  AT 8:00p.m. ET Marv Albert, Mike Fratello and David Aldridge call the Knicks at the Bulls.  At 10:30p.m. ET the Thunder take on the Warriors with Steve Kerr, Reggie Miller and Chris Webber with Craig Sager court side.

Turner Reports Record Numbers Watching NCAA Tourney Online–  Turner Sports reports that 49 million live streams and 14 million hours of video were consumed online this year during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  The 49 million live streams are up 168% over 2012.  The 14 million hours of live video streaming represented a 207% increase from 2012.

ESPN Announces Thanksgiving Night SEC Football Match-Up-  ESPN has announced today that on Thanksgiving night this fall it will telecast an SEC football battle between Mississippi and Mississippi State.  Kick-off will come Thursday, Novermber 28th at 7:30p.m. ET.

Next Edition of Studio 42 will Look at the Film 42–  The MLB network announced that the next edition of Studio 42 with Bob Costas will look at the Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures presentation of 42. Among the guests discussing the film on the life of Jackie Robinson will be Dodgers’ legend Don Newcombe and actors Harrison Ford and Chadwick Bosemalegend.  Studio 42 with Bob Costas debuts Saturday at 4:00p.m. ET.

Boxing Returns to HBO Saturday–  HBO’s next boxing card will come this Saturday from Radio City Music Hall in New York.  Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will call World Championship Boxing: Noniti Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux. Saturday at 11:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular has Supercross Sunday–  Prior to its coverage of the Masters on Sunday, the CBS Sports Spectacular will continue its coverage of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series at the FIM World Championship.  Ralph Sheheen, Jeff Emig and Erin Bates call the action at 12:00p.m. ET.

NBCSN Has 11 Hours of Formula One Coverage this Weekend–  The NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will produce  more than 11 hours of Formula One™ coverage this weekend highlighted by the Chinese Grand Prix. NBC Sports Network has Good First Quarter–  NBC Sports reported today that the viewership for the first quarter on the NBC Sports Network rose 14% over the same period last year.  NHL games were up 58% over 2012 while MLS action was up 8%.  The Dan Patrick Show viewership was also up 58% over 2012.

Floyd and Cora Join MLB Network–  The MLB Network has announced that Cliff Floyd and Joey Cora have joined the network as baseball analysts.  Floyd will debut Monday, April 15 on MLB Tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET and Cora will make his MLB Network debut onMLB Tonight on May 6.

Ben Crenshaw the Focus of this Year’s Jim Nantz Remembers–  This year’s Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta on CBS will look at two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw. Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: Ben Crenshaw at the Masters will air Sunday at 1:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular Also Features Golf this Saturday–  Prior to CBS’ coverage of the Masters Saturday CBS Sports Spectacular will produce two golf-centric programs.  At 1:30p.m. ET CBS Sports Spectacular will televise the Speedgolf World Championships from the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon.  At 2:00p.m. ET Jim Nantz hosts Masters Playoffs, looking back at the 16 playoffs that have been contested through the years at the Masters.

SiriusXM Radio at the Masters–  SiriusXM Radio will provide comprehensive coverage of this week’s Masters tournament.   Live hole-by-hole coverage begins 2:00p.m. ET Thursday on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, channel 93 for XM subscribers and channel 208 for Sirius Premier subscribers. Leading into the play-by-play, John Maginnes and Matt Adams will host a special Masters preview show Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm ET.  Immediately after the conclusion of each day’s play, Adams will host Masters Review, giving listeners a full recap of the day’s action.

Edwards to Rejoin ESPN Racing Booth for Three Races–  ESPN has announced that NASCAR driver Carl Edwards will return to the booth for the next three races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.  Edwards will join Allen Bestwick and Andy Partee for races April 12th, April 26th and May 4th.  Edwards made his debut in the ESPN booth last year, calling Nationwide Series races at Darlington Raceway and Kentucky Speedway.

Street Joins Fox Sports as 2014 Olympic Analyst–  Fox Sports announced today that Olympic gold medal downhill skier Picabo Street has joined FOX Sports as an analyst for the 2014 Winter Games from Sochi, Russia.  Street will provide analysis of all women’s and men’s skiing events, as well as contributes daily commentary prior to and throughout The Games across all of FSMG’s platforms including FOX Sports 1, FOXSports.com and FOX Sports Radio.

Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions Reach Deal for Boxing Programming– Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions have reached a multi-media rights extension to televise exciting live boxing in the United States and internationally.  The new multi-year agreement keeps Golden Boy Promotions’ bouts with Fox Sports for years to come, and helps establish a new Monday night boxing franchise on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), Fox Sports’ new, national multi-sport cable channel launching on Aug. 17.  Golden Boy Promotions was founded by 10-time World Champion Oscar De La Hoya.

Turner and CNN at the Final Four-  Turner Sports and CNN will partner on CNN All Access at the Final Four, a live one-hour special on Saturday, April 6, at 3:00 p.m. ET from Turner Studios in Atlanta.  Rachel Nichols and Turner Sports’ Reggie Miller will co-host the show.

NBC’s Road to the Kentucky Derby has Santa Anita Derby and Wood Memorial–  NBC Sports Network’s coverage of some of the prep races leading to the Kentucky Derby continues this weekend with the Santa Anita Derby and the Wood Memorial.  Coverage begins at 6:00p.m. ET with Laffit Pincay, III hosting coverage  from Santa Anita Park. He will be joined by analyst Randy Moss; reporters Donna Brothers and HRTV’s Christina Blacker; Maggie Wolfendale, in-house analyst for NYRA, will report on the Wood Memorial from Aqueduct Park.

Live Cycling Sunday Morning at NBC Sports Network- The NBC Sports Network will televise the 111th Paris-Roubaix cycling race this Sunday at 8:00 a.m. ET. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen will call all the action.

Bull Bucking Sunday on CBS Sports Spectacular–  This weekend the CBS Sports Spectacular will televise the Stanley Make Something Great Inibvitation Bull Bucking competition from Billings, MT. Craig Hummer, JW Hart and Leah Garcia call all the action beginning Sunday at 2:00p.m. ET.
