TBS Continues to See Viewership Increases in MLB Playoffs

Turner Sports announced today that Monday’s triple header of MLB Playoff action on TBS scored an average of 3,803,000 total viewers, an increase of 11% over the comparable Monday telecasts last year.  The 2.5 rating is up 9% compared with 2012.

Boston had the highest local market rating at 20.9 Monday, followed by Tampa at 17.0 and Los Angeles at 12.0.

Collins Joins ESPN as NBA Analyst

ESPN has announced today that it has signed former NBA guard and head coach Doug Collins to serve as a NBA analyst.

Collins will serve as an analyst on NBA Countdown –  with Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons. In addition, he will serve as a game analyst for select telecasts on ESPN.

Collins will also make regular appearances across ESPN entities, including SportsCenter, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com and additional news and information programming.

Collins will be taking over the regular spot on NBA Countdown  currently held by Michael Wilbon.  Wilbon will continue to have a significant presence on ESPN’s NBA coverage across platforms. He will contribute to ESPN news and information programming, including SportsCenter, where he will provide reports, analysis and offer essays on pertinent NBA topics. Wilbon will also be on site for the NBA Conference Finals and NBA Finals.

NBC Sports and Hockey East Reach Multi-Year Contract Extension

NBC Sports and the Hockey East Conference have announced that they have reached an extension to their existing contract that will keep the leagues games on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) through the 2014-2015 season.

NBCSN will annually televise a minimum of five Hockey East games, and up to 12 regular-season games over the next two years.

“We are pleased to continue our relationship with Hockey East and deliver live coverage of five Hockey East regular season games.” said Jon Miller, President, Programming NBC Sports and NBCSN. “With this renewal, Hockey East will continue to provide quality content for NBCSN across the next two college hockey seasons.”

“We are delighted to renew our relationship with NBCSN, whose commitment to showcase both amateur and professional hockey is unparalleled,” said Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna. “Hockey East embraces and values this partnership at a time when college hockey is experiencing seismic changes across the country.”

ESPN and ABC’s 2013-2014 NBA Television Schedule

ESPN today announced its schedule of NBA games to be telecast this coming season on ESPN and ABC.

The schedule will include 90 games, highlighted by 15 exclusive ABC broadcasts and 75 national ESPN telecasts.  The slate involves 16 appearances by both the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks and more than a dozen appearances each by the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls.

ESPN Adds Two NBA Analysts

ESPN announced today that it has hired former NBA coach Flip Saunders and former player Antonio Davis to serve as NBA analysts.

Saunders will appear on a number of studio shows, including SportsCenterNBA Coast to Coast and NBA Tonight. Saunders is scheduled to appear tonight during NBA Coast to Coast at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and Thursday during the 9 a.m. ET SportsCenter on ESPN.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to share the insights and perspective I gathered during my coaching career with NBA fans,” said Saunders. “I admire ESPN’s NBA coverage, and I’m glad to be part of the team.”

Davis will provide analysis on SportsCenterNBA Coast to CoastNBA Tonight and additional news and information programming.  He is scheduled to debut Thursday, Nov. 8, during the 9 a.m. ET SportsCenter on ESPN.

“I’m excited to dive right in at ESPN and lend my insights to the fans and viewers,” said Antonio Davis. “I’m a big ESPN fan and I love the game of basketball, so this is a great fit for me.”

Finale World Series Numbers Down from 2011–  Fox Sports reports that the four game sweep of the World Sereis by the San Francisco Giants over the Detroit Tigers averaged a 7.6 rating.  The 2011 seven game Fall Classic between the Cardinals and Rangers averaged a 10.0 rating.  Yesterday’s finale came in at 8.9, down from 9.2 for last year’s game four.  Game four last night did average 15.5 million viewers, up 2% from 2011.

CBS Sets Next SEC Schedule for Next Two–  CBS Sports has announced that this Saturday’s SEC match-up will pair Georgia at Ole Miss.  Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson, and Tracy Wolfson will be on the call, which kicks-off at 3:30p.m. ET On Saturday, November 10th CBS will have a SEC double header, beginning at 3:30p.m. ET as South Carolina takes on Arkansas.  Tim Brando, Steve Beuerlein and Marty Snider will call the action.  Lundquist, Danielson, and Wolfson return at 8:00p.m. ET as Alabama takes on LSU.  This past Saturday’s Florida/George match-up gave CBS a rating of 4.7, up 21% from last year.

Gold Gloves Award Show on ESPN2–  ESPN2 tomorrow night will have live coverage of the Rawlings Gold Gloves Award Show.  The awards, hosted by Steve Berthiaume with analysts John Kruk and Nomar Garciaparra, will air at 9:30p.m. ET.

Re/Max World Long Drive Championship Moves to Golf Channel from ESPN–  Long Drivers of America and the Golf Channel announced a new, long term broadcast that will move the event to Golf Channel next year after 17 years on ESPN.  The event will be showcased throughout October next year on Golf Channel through three primetime specials and the first-ever live, two-hour finale. NBC will air a 60-minute recap show of the entire championship later in the year, which will mark the first time the event in its 38-year history will be seen on network television.

NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup Races this Weekend on ESPN–  ESPN continues its season ending coverage of NASCAR this weekend from Fort Worth.  The Nationwide race will take place Saturday beginning at 7:00p.m. The Sprint Cup series Sunday at 2:00p.m.  Allen Bestwick (Sprint Cup) and Marty Reid (Nationwide) and analysts Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will call the action.

NBA League Pass Free Trial–  The NBA has announced that NBA League Pass, its package of all league games available through cable, broadband, and mobile, will offer a free trial beginning tomorrow. The free trial will last one week, through November 6th.
