Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 67- Kenny Albert, Fox Sports

Even though one would think this would be a slow time in terms of sports media news, that’s not the case as we begin another edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I start the show by talking about the new agreement between NBC Sports and Major League Soccer to carry MLS games beginning next year.  We also talk about the extension of ESPN’s agreement with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to continue to air the Indianapolis 500 on ABC through 2018.

We look at the impressive ratings numbers for Fox and ESPN on its coverage of Red Sox/Yankees and the discussion of East Coast Bias.

We also talk more about the growing number of NFL analysts at ESPN and the talent departures for the New England Sports Network.

Ken and I also look at the Fox NFL announcing line-up, a good lead-in to our guest, Fox Sports NFL and MLB announcer Kenny Albert.  Albert fills us in on the recent Fox NFL broadcasting boot camp, his comfort with analysts Daryl Johnston and Tony Siragusa, and his busy schedule covering all four major sports in a given year.

MLS & NBC Sports Group Reach Multi-Year Deal

NBC Sports Group and Major League Soccer (MLS) have negotiated a three-year media partnership deal which will begin in the 2012 MLS season.

Under the agreement, the network will televise 45 MLS games per season as well as 4 U.S. Men’s National Team matches. NBC will carry two regular season MLS matches, two MLS play-off matches, and two appearances by the U.S. National Team.  The NBC Sports Network (Versus) will televise 38regular season MLS matches, three MLS play-off matches, and 2 U.S. National Team matches.

“Everyone at the NBC Sports Group is thrilled to begin this partnership with Major League Soccer,” said NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus in a press release. “MLS is a perfect fit for our new group, and we are uniquely positioned to help grow soccer in the United States with extensive coverage on NBC Sports Network, significant programming on the broadcast network and our growing digital platforms. Additionally, this agreement complements the partnerships that five of our regional sports networks have with their local MLS teams.”

“Our new partnership with the NBC Sports Group is a significant step forward for Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer,” said MLS Commissioner and Soccer United Marketing CEO Don Garber. “The NBC Sports Group is world-renowned for its award-winning coverage, superb broadcast quality and promotional expertise.
