Sports Media Digest- April 8, 2013

NBC Sports Network has Good First Quarter–  NBC Sports reported today that the viewership for the first quarter on the NBC Sports Network rose 14% over the same period last year.  NHL games were up 58% over 2012 while MLS action was up 8%.  The Dan Patrick Show viewership was also up 58% over 2012.

Floyd and Cora Join MLB Network–  The MLB Network has announced that Cliff Floyd and Joey Cora have joined the network as baseball analysts.  Floyd will debut Monday, April 15 on MLB Tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET and Cora will make his MLB Network debut onMLB Tonight on May 6.

Ben Crenshaw the Focus of this Year’s Jim Nantz Remembers–  This year’s Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta on CBS will look at two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw. Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: Ben Crenshaw at the Masters will air Sunday at 1:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular Also Features Golf this Saturday–  Prior to CBS’ coverage of the Masters Saturday CBS Sports Spectacular will produce two golf-centric programs.  At 1:30p.m. ET CBS Sports Spectacular will televise the Speedgolf World Championships from the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon.  At 2:00p.m. ET Jim Nantz hosts Masters Playoffs, looking back at the 16 playoffs that have been contested through the years at the Masters.

SiriusXM Radio at the Masters–  SiriusXM Radio will provide comprehensive coverage of this week’s Masters tournament.   Live hole-by-hole coverage begins 2:00p.m. ET Thursday on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, channel 93 for XM subscribers and channel 208 for Sirius Premier subscribers. Leading into the play-by-play, John Maginnes and Matt Adams will host a special Masters preview show Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm ET.  Immediately after the conclusion of each day’s play, Adams will host Masters Review, giving listeners a full recap of the day’s action.

Edwards to Rejoin ESPN Racing Booth for Three Races–  ESPN has announced that NASCAR driver Carl Edwards will return to the booth for the next three races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.  Edwards will join Allen Bestwick and Andy Partee for races April 12th, April 26th and May 4th.  Edwards made his debut in the ESPN booth last year, calling Nationwide Series races at Darlington Raceway and Kentucky Speedway.

Street Joins Fox Sports as 2014 Olympic Analyst–  Fox Sports announced today that Olympic gold medal downhill skier Picabo Street has joined FOX Sports as an analyst for the 2014 Winter Games from Sochi, Russia.  Street will provide analysis of all women’s and men’s skiing events, as well as contributes daily commentary prior to and throughout The Games across all of FSMG’s platforms including FOX Sports 1, FOXSports.com and FOX Sports Radio.

Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions Reach Deal for Boxing Programming– Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions have reached a multi-media rights extension to televise exciting live boxing in the United States and internationally.  The new multi-year agreement keeps Golden Boy Promotions’ bouts with Fox Sports for years to come, and helps establish a new Monday night boxing franchise on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), Fox Sports’ new, national multi-sport cable channel launching on Aug. 17.  Golden Boy Promotions was founded by 10-time World Champion Oscar De La Hoya.

April Slate of Games on MLB Network

The 2013 Major League Baseball season begins Sunday and the MLB Network has unveiled its April slate of live games.

USA-Canada WBC Telecast Most-Watched Non-Playoff Game Ever on MLB Network– The MLB Network reports that Sunday’s USA-Canada World Baseball Classic game earned an average audience of 726,000 viewers, making the most-watched non-postseason game ever on the channel.  All WBC games last Friday through Sunday drew an average of 252,000 viewers, the most-watched weekend in the network’s history.

Fox Sports/ECAC Lacrosse Reach Deal–  Fox Sports has reached a deal with the ECAC Conference to telecast conference Lacrosse matches.  The deal begins this season as the Fox Sports Networks will televise the ECAC Lacrosse semifinals on Thursday, May 2nd (5:00 PM ET and 8:00 PM ET) and finals on Saturday, May 4th (4:00 PM ET) live from Hobart College.  The games will also be available on FUEL TV and FOX College Sports.  Beginning in 2014 the ECAC Lacrosse tournament will air on Fox Sports 1.

Pro Bowlers Association and CBS Sports Network Sign Multi-Year Deal–  The CBS Sports Network will be the new home for the Professional Bowlers Association Tour (PBA).  The deal begins this summer,  with five two-hour telecasts from four PBA Summer Swing events, and concludes with a GEICO PBA Summer King of the Swing special event featuring the top five competition points leaders from the Summer Swing events.

NBA on TNT-  TNT will have another NBA double header this Thursday.  The opener begins at 8:00p.m. ET as the Dallas Mavericks take on the San Antonio Spurs.  Ian Eagle, Mike Fratello and David Aldridge are on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET Kevin Harlan, Chris Webber and Craig Sager will call the New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers.

ABC has Single NBA Game This Sunday–  Only one NBA game is on tap this Sunday as part of ABC’s NBA Sunday Showcase.  The Knicks will take on the Clippers beginning at 3:30p.m. ET with Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy and Lisa Salters on site.

Fran Charles Joins MLB Network–  The MLB Network (MLBN) announced today that long-time sports anchor Fran Charles is joining the network.  Charles, who has had stints on the NFL Network, USA and HBO, begin his new job on World Baseball Classic Today this Saturday, March 9th following Second Round action of the World Baseball Classic  from Tokyo, Japan, which begins live at 5:00 a.m. ET.

NBA Action This Week on ESPN–  ESPN will air a single NBA game Wednesday and a double header on Friday.  Wednesday at 9:00p.m. ET the Bulls take on the Spurs with Mark Jones, Jon Barry and Heather Cox at the mic.  Friday’s action begins at 8:00p.m. ET with the Hawks at the Celtics with Mike Tirico, Jon Barry and Chris Broussard on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET the Rockets take on the Warriors with Dave Pasch, Jeff Van Gundy and Lisa Salters.

Adam Schein To Host Show on Mad Dog Radio–  SiriusXM Radio announced today that Adam Schein will host a weekday show on the network’s Mad Dog Radio Channel, SiriusXM channel 86.  Schein on Sports debuts next Monday at 10:00a.m. ET.

Rich Gannon Joins Bruce Murray on SiriusXM NFL Radio–  SiriusXM Radio also announced the hiring of former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon to join host Bruce Murray on a new show on SiriusXM’s NFL Channel, channel 88.  The pair will debut on The SiriusXM Blitz beginning next Monday at 11:00a.m. ET.

NBA Doubleheader on TNT–  Off of its success during the All-Star Game, TNT returns Thursday with its scheduled doubleheader.  AT 8:00p.m. ET the Miami Heat take on the Chicago Bulls with Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, and Craig Sager on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller, Chris Webber and Rachel Nichols will call the San Antonio Spurs at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Darryl Hamilton Joins MLB Network as Analyst–  MLB Network announced today that former major league outfielder Darryl Hamilton is joining the network as a baseball analyst.  Hamilton will make his debut calling two games at the 2013 Urban Invitational tournament at in Houston this Saturday, February 23rd with MLB Network’s Paul Severino, Joe Magrane and Sam Ryan, beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Super Bowl XLVII the Focus of final NFL Turning Point–  NBC Sports Network produces its final NFL Turning Point for the 2012 season with a look at the key plays from Super Bowl XLVII.  NFL Turning Point, hosted by Dan Patrick, airs tonight at 10:00p.m. ET.

Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson to Call /Hoosiers Spartans Hoop Game–  ESPN has announced that Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson will serve as analysts with Mike Tirico when the network telecasts the February 19th college basketball match-up between Indiana and Michigan State.  Tip off is 7:00p.m. ET.

BTN Sees Highest January Prime Time Ratings Ever–  The Big Ten Network (BTN) reports that its prime time ratings for the month of January were the highest ever for the network.  BTN’s average primet ime men’s conference basketball rating was 0.87 in the network’s eight metered markets.  Among all national sports networks for the month, BTN trailed only ESPN in its eight metered markets.

Former College QB’s to Compete for Spring Invite on MLB Network Reality Show–  The MLB Network is producing a reality show where former college football quarterbacks John David Booty,Josh Booty, Doug Flutie, David Greene and Ryan Perrilloux will be taught to throw a knuckleball with the possibility of being invited to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Spring Training camp.  Kevin Millar and Tim Wakefield will host The Next Knuckler, which will premiere on February 13th at 9:00p.m. ET.

Actor Wuhl to Host Fantasy Baseball Show on SiriusXM–  SiriusXM Radio announced today that comedian and actor Robert Wuhl will host a new weekly fantasy baseball show on SiriusXM’s 24/7 channel dedicated to fantasy sports.  Off the Wuhl, hosted by Wuhl and Casey Stern, will debut tonight and air live every Wednesday night (9:00-11:00 pm ET / 6:00-8:00 pm PT) on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio (XM channel 87 and Sirius channel 210 with Sirius Premier).

NASCAR Now Returns to ESPN–  With the NASCAR season set to begin soon, so will ESPN’s presentation of its NASCAR Now program.  The seventh season of ESPN2’s news and information program will begin Friday, February 8th, at 3:00 p.m. ET with a program originating from the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.  Allen Bestwick will host the NASCAR Now Hall of Fame program, joined by analysts Dale Jarrett and Ray Evernham.  Mike Massaro, Nicole Briscoe, Marty Reid, Shannon Spake and Bestwick will be ongoing hosts of NASCAR Now again this season, with ESPN SportsCenter anchors Lindsay Czarniak and Jonathan Coachman also occasionally hosting.  Ricky Craven will continue as an analyst for NASCAR Now with regular contributions from Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Evernham and analysts Andy Petree and Brad Daugherty. The daily NASCAR Now show will resume on February 11th.

Big Ten Network Names Women’s Hoops Wild Card Games–  The Big Ten Network (BTN) has announced its slate of women’s basketball wild card games as we head toward the end of the regular season.  Here is the schedule for February 28th and March 3rd:

Rieff Named Anchor of ESPN’s NHRA Coverage–  ESPN announced today that Dave Rieff, who has been a pit reporter on NHRA coverage since 2001, has been promoted to anchor when the season gets underway next week.  Rieff will call the action from the booth with analyst Mike Dunn.  Gary Gerould, John Kernan and Jamie Howe will report from the pits and trackside.

Terry Francona to Join Bob Costas Wednesday on MLB Network–  The next edition of Studio 42 with Bob Costas will feature an interview with former Red Sox and current Indians manager Terry Francona.  The interview will air Wednesday at 9:00p.m. ET.  MLBN will air a second Studio 42 with Bob Costas Thursday at 9:00p.m. ET as Costas sits down with David Robinson, son of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson.

Tim Brando’s Radio Show Shifts to Sirius XM Radio–  Sirius XM Radio announced today that The Tim Brando Show will now have an exclusive home on its network.  The show had been part of Yahoo! Sports Radio.  The program will begin airing on Sirius XM College Sports Nation, channel 91, beginning next Monday at 9:00a.m. ET.

McNabb Added as Major Contributor to NBC Sports Radio-  Dial Global and NBC Sports have announced that former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb has been added as a regular contributor on NBC Sports Radio.  McNabb will appear on the network beginning this week at the Super Bowl and will also be part of a new soon-to-be-announced Monday-Friday show to be launched on April 1st.

ESPN Announces Next Two 30 for 30 Film Releases–  ESPN has scheduled the debut for the next two films in it’s 30 for 30 documentary series.  Survive and Advance, from director Jonathan Hock , will debut on March 17 at 9:00p.m. ET and looks at Jim Valvano and the ’82-’83 season of the North Carolina State Wolfpack.  Elway to Marino, from NFL Films and director Ken Rodgers, will debut on April 23rd at 9:00p.m. ET and offer an in-depth examination of the 1983 NFL Draft  that was highlighted by a record six quarterbacks being taken in the first round, including future Hall of Famers John Elway and Dan Marino.

NBA Action this Week on ESPN-  ESPN will have NBA double header action this Wednesday and Friday.  Wednesday at 8:00p.m. ET the Heat will take on the Nets with Mike Breen, Hubie Brown and Chris Broussard.  at 10:30p.m. ET Dave Pasch, Jon Barry and Heather Cox will cal the Lakers at Suns.  Friday at 7:00p.m. ET the Heat are at the Pacers with Mark Jones and Jon Barry.  Terry Gannon, Chris Mullin and Heather Cox will call the Lakers at Timberwolves at 9:30p.m. ET.

NBA TV to Present Mid Season Report Card-  NBA TV will produce a program this week looking at the 2012-2013 NBA season at the mid-way point.  Midseason Report Special on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. ET. Rick Kamla and Dennis Scott (analyst) will be joined by NBA.com writers Steve Aschburner, Scott Howard-Cooper and Sekou Smith to review all the grades and assess each team. NBA TV insider David Aldridge will also contribute to the show.

U.S. Men’s Soccer vs. Canada-  ESPN2 will have coverage of the first match featuring the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team this year.  Glenn Davis and Taylor Twellman will have the call with sideline reporter Mónica González.  Alexi Lalas will provide halftime commentary.  Kick-off is tomorrow night at 9:00p.m. ET

Despite Lockout, NBC Sees Solid NHL Ratings Opening Weekend–  NBC’s coverage of the NHL opening day Saturday resulted in the most-watched, non- Winter Classic regular season game in 14 years.  Regional coverage of the Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings, and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers, was watched by 2.77 million viewers.  The games were the most-watched NHL regular-season coverage on NBC since the network again began broadcasting the league in 2006, and the most-watched since three-game regional coverage on Fox in 1999.

MLB Network to Produce Musial Special–  The MLB Network (MLBN) will produce a special looking back at the life and career of Cardinals great Stan Musial.  Bob Costas and Tom Verducci will host MLB Network Remembers: Stan Musial tomorrow, January 24 at 9:00 p.m. ET.  Guests will include Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Bob Gibson, along with MLBN analyst Jim Kaat.

U.S. Figure Skating on NBC Sports–  NBC Sports will be providing ten hours of coverage to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships from Omaha, NE.  The action begins this Saturday at 3:00p.m. ET with , with live coverage of the Pairs Free Skate and Free Dance. The Ladies Short Program will air at 8:00 p.m. ET, followed by live coverage of the Ladies Free Skate. Coverage continues on Sunday with the Men’s Free Skate, live, from 3-5:00 p.m. ET.  Mike Emrick will host the Saturday Night and Sunday coverage while Steve Schlager will host the action Saturday afternoon.  They will be joined by analysts Scott Hamilton, Sandra Bezic and Tracy Wilson with Andrea Joyce handling off-ice interviews.

PGA Tour Returns to CBS This Weekend–  CBS Sports will debut its 2013 PGA coverage with the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.  Coverage begins Saturday and SUnday at 3:00p.m. ET.  Jim Nantz anchors the coverage along with Sir Nick Faldo.   Ian Baker-Finch, Gary McCord, David Feherty, Peter Kostis, Bill Macatee, Verne Lundquist and Peter Oosterhuis will be on hand at hole locations or along the course.

SI Cover Looks at Super Bowl Match-up, Musial–  This week’s edition of Sports Illustrated will, understandably, focus on the NFL Conference Championship games and the upcoming Super Bowl.  In terms of the covers, four were produced around the NFL while four others were produced following the passing of Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial.  Here’s a look:

NFL Divisional Playoff Viewership Wrap– The NFL announced today that for the third year in a row an average of 34 million viewers tuned in to the Divisional Playoffs.  All four games were also the most-watched programs of the week on all of television.  Sunday’s Texans/Patriots game led the way (37.7 million viewers) followed by CBS’ Saturday’s Ravens/Broncos match-up (35.3 million).  Seahawks/Falcons (32.1 million) and Packers/49ers (30.9 million) on Fox round out the weekend action.

All Four Divisional Playoff Games to be Featured on NFL Turning Point–  The NBC Sports Network will look back at all four NFL Divisional Playoff games on this week’s edition of NFL Turning Point.  Dan Patrick hosts the show tomorrow at 10:00p.m. ET.

SiriusXM to Carry Lance Armstrong/Oprah Winfrey Special– SiriusXM Radio will have radio coverage of Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Lance Armstrong.  Oprah and Lance Armstrong: The Worldwide Exclusive will premiere on SiriusXM’s Oprah Radio (XM channel 111 and Sirius channel 206 with Sirius Premier) on Friday, January 18.

TNT Has All-Star Game Announcement and Double Header Thursday–  Prior to this week’s NBA double header, TNT will have the exclusive announcement of the 2013 NBA All-Star Teams.  Ernie Johnson will host with analysts Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith.  Game oneof the double header tips-off at 8:00p.m. ET with the L.A. Clippers at Minnesota Timberwolves.  Kevin Harlan, Mike Fratello, and Tracy Wolfson will be on hand.  At 10:30p.m. ET Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, Reggie Miller and Craig Sager will have the call as the Miami Heat take on the L.A. Team USA World Baseball Classic Team to be Unveiled on MLB Network–  The MLB Network will have exclusive coverage of the unveiling of the USA World Baseball Classic team in a special Thursday afternoon.  Matt Vasgersian and Bill Ripken will have the announcement on Hot Stove Thursday at 10:00a.m. ET.  Later in the day, the remainder of the Provisional Rosters for the 16-team field will be announced on MLB Network during a World Baseball Classic Roster Special live at 4:00 p.m. ET. Co-hosted by MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger and Heidi Watney with Dan Plesac and Bill Ripken.

ESPN Networks Part of New Deal Between Disney and AT&T U-Verse–  The Walt Disney Company and AT&T U-Verse have announced a long-term deal which will allow multiple Disney networks to be carried on the cable television provider.  Included are the ESPN family of networks, including the online as part of the WatchESPN app offerings.

CBS Sports Network Has Four Men’s College Hoops Games Over the Next Two Days–  Three men’s college basketball games will air on the CBS Sports Network over the next two days.  Wednesday at 8:00p.m. ET Xavier takes on St. Bonneventure with Don Criqui and Chris Spatola on the call.  At 10:00p.m. ET Steve Lappas and Doug Gottlieb call the action as UNLV takes on San Diego State.   On Thursday at 7:00p.m. ET Duquesne takes on UMass with Dave Ryan and Pete Gillen at the mic.  The finale will feature St. Josephs at VCU with Tom McCarthy and Steve Wolf.

Big East Women’s Twin Bill on CBS Sports Network–  The CBS Sports Network will televise a Big East women’s basketball double header tonight.  At 7:00p.m. ET James Bates and Tammy Blackburn will call Georgetown at Notre Dame.  At 9:00p.m. ET Louisville and Connecticut will do battle with Brent Stover and Debbie Antonelli courtside.
