Sports Media Digest- April 18, 2013

1983 Quarterback Draft Next Focus of ESPN’s 30 for 30–  The next 30 for 30 documentary film on ESPN will look at the banner crop of quarterbacks taken in the 1983 NFL Draft.  Elway to Marino is directed by Ken Rodgers and narrated by Tom Selleck.  The file debuts this Tuesday debuts at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

NASCAR Sprint Cup from Kansas Speedway on Fox  The next stop in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, the STP 400,  will originate from Kansas Speedway and be telecast on Fox this Sunday.  Pre-race coverage begins at 12:30p.m. ET with Chris Myers and Darrell and Michael Waltrip.  Darell Waltrip will join Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds in the booth for the call of the race. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits for reports on teams and pit while Jeff Hammond serves as the roaming reporter.

Friday’s Red Sox/Royals Game to Air on MLB Network–  The MLB Network announced that it will televise the first Red Sox game in Boston since the bombing at the Boston Marathon.  Matt Vasgersian, John Smoltz and Tom Verducci will call the game between the Red Sox and Kansas City Royals on MLB Network Showcase Friday at 7:00p.m. ET.  MLB Network’s telecast of the game will be blacked out in the Red Sox’ and Royals’ home television territories.

NBA Digital has Record Regular Season–  NBA Digital reports record setting viewership on both NBA TV and online for the recently completed regular season.  NBA TV averaged 336,000 total viewers for its 98 regular-season telecasts, up 33% over the last full NBA regular-season in 2010-11 (253,000). had nearly 6.6 billion page views and 3.9 billion video streams – both all-time records – from the start of the season through Sunday, April 14 while NBA Mobile generating more than 86 million video streams this season, a record-setting mark.

RBC Heritage PGA on CBS- For the 45th straight year, CBS Sports will have coverage this weekend of the RBC Heritage PGA Tournament from Hilton Head, SC.  Jim Nantz and Sir Nick Faldo will anchor the coverage along with Ian Baker-Finch,  Gary McCord, David Feherty and Peter Kostis.

Fox Sports Reaches Deal with National Women’s Soccer League-  Fox Sports announced today that it has reached a media rights agreement with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Fox will air six regular-season matches and all three playoff matches, which include the two semifinal games on August 24 and 25, and the championship game on August 31.

CBS Sports Spectacular This Weekend–  CBS Sports has a full slate of events on the CBS Sports Spectacular Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday at 1:00p.m. ET CBS will televise the Lucas Oil Pro 4 & Pro 2 off-road race.  Ken Stout, Cameron Steele, Rob Klepper and Erin Bates call the action.  At 2:00p.m. ET CBE goes behind the scenes at this year’s Final Four with CBS Sports’ 75 Years of March Madness: Final Four Confidential.   Sunday at 1:00p.m. the next in the Monster AMA Supercross series will take to the air with Ralph Sheheen, Jeff Emig and Erin Bates.  At 2:00p.m. ET Craig Hummer, Ty Murray and Leah Garcia call the Caterpillar Classic Pro Bull Riders event.

30 for 30 Short Features Bill Parcells First Year as Giants Coach–  The latest in a series of ESPN’s 30 for 30 film shorts is available for viewing on Grantland.  The Irrelevant Giant looks at Giants coach Bill Parcells in his rookie and the selection of Cal running back John Tuggle as the last player taken in the 1983 draft.

CBS Sports Network to Supplement Showtime’s Coverage of Mayweather/Guerrero-  The CBS Sports Network will provide over 10 hours of coverage surrounding Floyd Mayweather’s debut fight on Showtime against Robert Guerrero on Saturday, May 4th .  Among the coverage will be the official weigh-in on May 3rd and a replay of both fighter’s previous bouts.

ESPN to Provide Two Hour NFL Schedule Release Provide–  When the official 2013 NFL schedule is released tomorrow night, ESPN will produce a 2-hour special. SportsCenter Special: NFL Schedule Release airs at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Trey Wingo will host with analysts Ron Jaworski, Bill Polian and Jason Taylor.

MLB Network to Televise Live Minor League Baseball-  The MLB Network today released a schedule of five minor league baseball games which will be telecast on the network.  The five game early-season slate is capped off by the Triple A All Star Game on July 17th.  Here is the schedule:

NBA Double Header Tomorrow on TNT–  TNT resumes its Thursday night NBA double header tomorrow night.  AT 8:00p.m. ET Marv Albert, Mike Fratello and David Aldridge call the Knicks at the Bulls.  At 10:30p.m. ET the Thunder take on the Warriors with Steve Kerr, Reggie Miller and Chris Webber with Craig Sager court side.

Turner Reports Record Numbers Watching NCAA Tourney Online–  Turner Sports reports that 49 million live streams and 14 million hours of video were consumed online this year during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  The 49 million live streams are up 168% over 2012.  The 14 million hours of live video streaming represented a 207% increase from 2012.

ESPN Announces Thanksgiving Night SEC Football Match-Up-  ESPN has announced today that on Thanksgiving night this fall it will telecast an SEC football battle between Mississippi and Mississippi State.  Kick-off will come Thursday, Novermber 28th at 7:30p.m. ET.

Next Edition of Studio 42 will Look at the Film 42–  The MLB network announced that the next edition of Studio 42 with Bob Costas will look at the Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures presentation of 42. Among the guests discussing the film on the life of Jackie Robinson will be Dodgers’ legend Don Newcombe and actors Harrison Ford and Chadwick Bosemalegend.  Studio 42 with Bob Costas debuts Saturday at 4:00p.m. ET.

Boxing Returns to HBO Saturday–  HBO’s next boxing card will come this Saturday from Radio City Music Hall in New York.  Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will call World Championship Boxing: Noniti Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux. Saturday at 11:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular has Supercross Sunday–  Prior to its coverage of the Masters on Sunday, the CBS Sports Spectacular will continue its coverage of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series at the FIM World Championship.  Ralph Sheheen, Jeff Emig and Erin Bates call the action at 12:00p.m. ET.

NBCSN Has 11 Hours of Formula One Coverage this Weekend–  The NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will produce  more than 11 hours of Formula One™ coverage this weekend highlighted by the Chinese Grand Prix. NBC Sports Network has Good First Quarter–  NBC Sports reported today that the viewership for the first quarter on the NBC Sports Network rose 14% over the same period last year.  NHL games were up 58% over 2012 while MLS action was up 8%.  The Dan Patrick Show viewership was also up 58% over 2012.

Floyd and Cora Join MLB Network–  The MLB Network has announced that Cliff Floyd and Joey Cora have joined the network as baseball analysts.  Floyd will debut Monday, April 15 on MLB Tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET and Cora will make his MLB Network debut onMLB Tonight on May 6.

Ben Crenshaw the Focus of this Year’s Jim Nantz Remembers–  This year’s Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta on CBS will look at two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw. Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: Ben Crenshaw at the Masters will air Sunday at 1:00p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Spectacular Also Features Golf this Saturday–  Prior to CBS’ coverage of the Masters Saturday CBS Sports Spectacular will produce two golf-centric programs.  At 1:30p.m. ET CBS Sports Spectacular will televise the Speedgolf World Championships from the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon.  At 2:00p.m. ET Jim Nantz hosts Masters Playoffs, looking back at the 16 playoffs that have been contested through the years at the Masters.

SiriusXM Radio at the Masters–  SiriusXM Radio will provide comprehensive coverage of this week’s Masters tournament.   Live hole-by-hole coverage begins 2:00p.m. ET Thursday on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, channel 93 for XM subscribers and channel 208 for Sirius Premier subscribers. Leading into the play-by-play, John Maginnes and Matt Adams will host a special Masters preview show Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm ET.  Immediately after the conclusion of each day’s play, Adams will host Masters Review, giving listeners a full recap of the day’s action.

Edwards to Rejoin ESPN Racing Booth for Three Races–  ESPN has announced that NASCAR driver Carl Edwards will return to the booth for the next three races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.  Edwards will join Allen Bestwick and Andy Partee for races April 12th, April 26th and May 4th.  Edwards made his debut in the ESPN booth last year, calling Nationwide Series races at Darlington Raceway and Kentucky Speedway.

Street Joins Fox Sports as 2014 Olympic Analyst–  Fox Sports announced today that Olympic gold medal downhill skier Picabo Street has joined FOX Sports as an analyst for the 2014 Winter Games from Sochi, Russia.  Street will provide analysis of all women’s and men’s skiing events, as well as contributes daily commentary prior to and throughout The Games across all of FSMG’s platforms including FOX Sports 1, and FOX Sports Radio.

Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions Reach Deal for Boxing Programming– Fox Sports and Golden Boy Promotions have reached a multi-media rights extension to televise exciting live boxing in the United States and internationally.  The new multi-year agreement keeps Golden Boy Promotions’ bouts with Fox Sports for years to come, and helps establish a new Monday night boxing franchise on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), Fox Sports’ new, national multi-sport cable channel launching on Aug. 17.  Golden Boy Promotions was founded by 10-time World Champion Oscar De La Hoya.

The 2013 Major League Baseball season begins Sunday and the MLB Network has unveiled its April slate of live games.

The network will produce five games during the month.  Here is the schedule with announcer assignments:

Sports Media Digest- March 12, 2013

USA-Canada WBC Telecast Most-Watched Non-Playoff Game Ever on MLB Network– The MLB Network reports that Sunday’s USA-Canada World Baseball Classic game earned an average audience of 726,000 viewers, making the most-watched non-postseason game ever on the channel.  All WBC games last Friday through Sunday drew an average of 252,000 viewers, the most-watched weekend in the network’s history.

Fox Sports/ECAC Lacrosse Reach Deal–  Fox Sports has reached a deal with the ECAC Conference to telecast conference Lacrosse matches.  The deal begins this season as the Fox Sports Networks will televise the ECAC Lacrosse semifinals on Thursday, May 2nd (5:00 PM ET and 8:00 PM ET) and finals on Saturday, May 4th (4:00 PM ET) live from Hobart College.  The games will also be available on FUEL TV and FOX College Sports.  Beginning in 2014 the ECAC Lacrosse tournament will air on Fox Sports 1.

Pro Bowlers Association and CBS Sports Network Sign Multi-Year Deal–  The CBS Sports Network will be the new home for the Professional Bowlers Association Tour (PBA).  The deal begins this summer,  with five two-hour telecasts from four PBA Summer Swing events, and concludes with a GEICO PBA Summer King of the Swing special event featuring the top five competition points leaders from the Summer Swing events.

NBA on TNT-  TNT will have another NBA double header this Thursday.  The opener begins at 8:00p.m. ET as the Dallas Mavericks take on the San Antonio Spurs.  Ian Eagle, Mike Fratello and David Aldridge are on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET Kevin Harlan, Chris Webber and Craig Sager will call the New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers.

ABC has Single NBA Game This Sunday–  Only one NBA game is on tap this Sunday as part of ABC’s NBA Sunday Showcase.  The Knicks will take on the Clippers beginning at 3:30p.m. ET with Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy and Lisa Salters on site.

Fran Charles Joins MLB Network–  The MLB Network (MLBN) announced today that long-time sports anchor Fran Charles is joining the network.  Charles, who has had stints on the NFL Network, USA and HBO, begin his new job on World Baseball Classic Today this Saturday, March 9th following Second Round action of the World Baseball Classic  from Tokyo, Japan, which begins live at 5:00 a.m. ET.

NBA Action This Week on ESPN–  ESPN will air a single NBA game Wednesday and a double header on Friday.  Wednesday at 9:00p.m. ET the Bulls take on the Spurs with Mark Jones, Jon Barry and Heather Cox at the mic.  Friday’s action begins at 8:00p.m. ET with the Hawks at the Celtics with Mike Tirico, Jon Barry and Chris Broussard on the call.  At 10:30p.m. ET the Rockets take on the Warriors with Dave Pasch, Jeff Van Gundy and Lisa Salters.

Adam Schein To Host Show on Mad Dog Radio–  SiriusXM Radio announced today that Adam Schein will host a weekday show on the network’s Mad Dog Radio Channel, SiriusXM channel 86.  Schein on Sports debuts next Monday at 10:00a.m. ET.

Rich Gannon Joins Bruce Murray on SiriusXM NFL Radio–  SiriusXM Radio also announced the hiring of former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon to join host Bruce Murray on a new show on SiriusXM’s NFL Channel, channel 88.  The pair will debut on The SiriusXM Blitz beginning next Monday at 11:00a.m. ET.
