NBC Sports Group’s Coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament

NBC Sports begins comprehensive coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament next week.  Through its various platforms NBC plans a combined 110 hours of coverage.

NBC will provide 17 hours of live tournament coverage Thursday through Sunday.  Bob Costas will host the network’s coverage while Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller hand the lead play-by-play and analysts role from the 18th green.  Tower reporters include Gary Koch and Peter Jacobsen; on-course reporters are Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay. Steve Sands will handle player interviews; and Jimmy Roberts will offer special reports.

The Golf Channel will provide 56 hours of news coverage of the tournament through its programs Morning Drive, Live from the U.S. Open,  The Golf Fix and Grey Goose 19th Hole.

Local coverage will also be made available on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia and local Philadelphia NBC affiliate NBC 10.  The tournament will also be made available online through the NBC Sports Live Extra app.

Golf Channel Celebrates Most- Watched May in History–  The Golf Channel registered 16.9 unique viewers in May.  The daily average of 133,000 viewers is 19% over 2012, making it the most-watched May in the history of the network.  The network also reported it is expected to show record numbers for May as well on Golfchannel.com.

ESPN Sees Strong Viewership to Start WNBA Season– The Memorial Day doubleheader of the WNBA gave ESPN an average rating of 0.3 and an average audience of 366,000 viewers.  The nightcap,  Chicago at Phoenix on ESPN2, was the most- watched WNBA game since July of 2004.

Pro Football Talk to Unveil Each NFL Club’s Mount Rushmore–  Mike Florio and Pro Football Talk on the NBC Sports Network will produce a special series  “Faces of the Franchise; Who’s on Your Team’s Mount Rushmore?” — to determine the four most influential people in the history of each NFL team.  The special premieres this Monday at 5:00p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

NASCAR Sprint Cup this Weekend on Fox– Fox Sports wraps-up its coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunday afternoon from Dover, DE.  Coverage begins at 12:30p.m. ET with pre-race action hosted by Chris Myers with Darrell and Michael Waltrip.  When the race begins Mike Joy calls the action alongside analysts Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds while Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits for reports on teams and pit stops. FOX Sports’ Jeff Hammond serves as the network’s roving analyst.

Jemele Hill To Become Co-Host of Number Never Lie–  ESPN has announced that Jemele Hill will serve as co-host of the afternoon program Numbers Never Lie with Michael Smith.  Hill will begin her new role next month.

Fox Sports Tabs Dallman as Fox Sports 1 News Director–  Fox Sports announced today that it has promoted Bill Dallman, a longtime executive at multiple FOX owned-and-operated news stations, hto serve as Vice President/News Director for FOX Sports 1.  Dallman will begin in his role on July 1st and will work with affiliates and Fox Sports Regional networks in managing the news-gathering operation and overseeing the editorial format of Fox Sports Live when it launches on August 17th.

CBS’s Coverage of The Memorial–  CBS Sports continues its coverage of the PGA Tour this weekend with the telecast of The Memorial Tournament from Dublin, OH.  Coverage on Saturday begins at 3:00p.m. ET while on Sunday action gets underway at 2:30p.m. ET.  Jim Nantz,and Sir Nick Faldo call the action from the 18th tower  while Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole and Gary McCord at the 16th hole.  David Feherty and Matt Gogel serve as on-course reporters.

NBC Sports Group Primed for Extensive Coverage of the Players Championship

Next week the NBC Sports Group will produce over 80 hours of programming around the PGA Tournament Players Championship from the TPC Sawgrass.

Golf Channel Reports Most-Watched April Ever–  Over 19 million viewers tuned in to watch the Golf Channel in April, making it the most watched April in the history of the network.  128,000 average viewers per minute were tuned in to Golf Channel in April, representing a 11% year-over-year increase compared to April 2012.  The network also saw record traffic for its online properties in April.

SiriusXM Coverage of the Kentucky Derby–  SiriusXm Radio is the satellite radio home of this year’s Kentucky Derby.  Programming will originate from Churchill Downs across Sirius channel 93 and XM channel 209.  On race day Saturday  a special pre-Derby edition of Down The Stretch, hosted by Dave Johnson and Bill Finley, will air live from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm ET. Race coverage begins at 5:00p.m. ET.

Golf Channel’s Coverage of the Masters

The Golf Channel will provide nearly 70 total hours of live news and related to next week’s Masters.

Live From the Masters will dominate Golf Channel’s daytime and primetime schedules during Masters week with more than 50 live hours from Augusta, Ga., and the network’s studio headquarters. Coverage begins Monday and will conclude with a post-tournament show after the last putt drops on Sunday.

Morning Drive: Golf Channel will begin each morning of Masters Week with the latest news, commentary and features on Morning Drive. Monday’s show will introduce viewers to all 93 players in the field, from the 14-year-old Guan Tianlang of China to 63-year-old former Masters Champion Tom Watson. With a little help from apparel manufacturers, the Morning Drive team also will give viewers a sneak preview of what select players will be wearing during the week.

Special Guests Joining Coverage: A list of golfing legends scheduled to make appearances during the week include: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Ray Floyd, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Faldo, Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Johnny Miller and Sandy Lyle.

NCAA Tourney Viewership Continues to Impress for CBS and Turner-  Through Thursday’s games the viewership for the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament continues to be the best in 20 years.  The average audience is 9 million viewers, up 8% from 2012.  The average rating of 5.9 i s up 7% over last year and the highest in 15 years.

ESPN Digital Media Properties Top in Sports Usage Category for February–  ESPN reports that its digital properties accounted for 28% of all sports category usage across digital platforms in February. ESPN was second behinf Yahoo Sports in unique visitors to ESPN.com but was tops in total number of minutes spent online with 3.7 million minutes.

Bobby Knight on Next Edition of Feherty–  The next edition of David Feherty’s Golf Channel program Feherty will feature a conversation with former college basketball coach Bobby Knight.  The episode airs Monday at 10:00p.m. ET.

Sports Media Digest- March 19, 2013

Cowboys and Dolphins to Play in Hall of Fame Game–  The NFL announced today that the Dallas Cowboys will take on the Miami Dolphins in the traditional Hall of Fame game to kick-off the 2013 NFL pre-season.  The game will take place Sunday, August 4th at 8p.m. ET and air on NBC.

Scruggs to Host Voices of the Game Middays on NBC Sports Radio– NBC Sports Radio has announced that weekend sports talk host Newy Scruggs will host a 12:00-3:00p.m. ET weekday show beginning April 1st.  Voices of the Game with Newy Scruggs will feature a recognizable sports “voice” during the entire second hour of the show. Personalities will include Chipper Jones (Tuesdays), Stan Van Gundy (Fridays), Bobby Valentine (Thursdays) and Chris Mannix (Wednesdays).

NBC and Golf Channel Prep for Arnold Palmer Invitational–  NBC Sports and the Golf Channel will provide blanket coverage of this weekend’s PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational.  The networks will devote nearly 80 total hours of news and tournament action, which includes 22 live hours of tournament coverage on NBC and Golf Channel.  The Golf Channel will have first and second round action Thursday and Friday beginning at 3:00p.m. ET.  Third and fourth round coverage on Golf Channel begins at 12:30p.m. ET while NBC takes over Saturday and Sunday at 2:30p.m. ET. Golf Broadcast teams will include Rich Lerner and Frank Nobilo (Golf Channel), and Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller (NBC). For telecasts on both networks, Gary Koch and Peter Jacobsen will report from tower positions, while Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay will walk the course. Steve Sands will conduct player interviews. Jimmy Roberts will be around for the weekend.
