Kevin Kugler and Eric Collins will call the action over the course of the tournament, with analysts Danan Hughes and Scott Pose.  Lisa Byington will serve as field reporter.

Sports Media Digest- March 14, 2013

SiriusXM Radio’s Coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament– SiriusXM Radio will be broadcasting every game of the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament. Action can be heard on Sirius channels 91, 92, 93, 94 and 85 and XM channels 91, 190, 191, 192 and 85. Tournament match-ups and SiriusXM channel assignments will be available at www.siriusxm.com/collegesports starting Monday, March 18.

Strong Viewership Numbers in February for Big Ten Network– The prime time ratings during the month of February on the Big Ten Network (BTN) was the best ever for the network.  Fueled by Big Ten college basketball, the numbers were up 20% over February of 2012 and up over the record ratings the network experienced in January.

Fans to Determine Greatest Play in NFL History Through Bracket Tournament on NFL.com–  NFL fans can vote for the greatest play in NFL history through a bracket-type exercise on NFL.com.  The 64-NFL play bracket is comprised of 41 offensive plays, 13 defensive plays, seven special team plays, and three plays in which an offensive player performs a defensive act. Eleven Super Bowl plays are among the field selected.  Fans can start voting on the round of 64 on Monday, March 18 at nfl.com/bracketology. The Championship round will conclude on Monday, April 8 when the greatest play in NFL history will be crowned.

NASCAR Sprint Cup from Bristol on Fox-  The next stop in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series will originate from Bristol Motor Speedway and be telecast on Fox this Sunday.  Pre-race coverage begins at 12:30p.m. ET with Chris Myers and Darrell and Michael Waltrip.  Darell Waltrip will join Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds in the booth for the call of the race. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits for reports on teams and pit while Jeff Hammond serves as the roaming reporter.

Fox Soccer to Telecast CONCACAF Gold Cup–  Fox Sports has announced that Fox Soccer Channel will be the home to the 25 matches of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.  Coverage begins July 7th with a double header from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Fox Soccer has Premier League Twin Bill Sunday–  Fox Soccer will telecast a pair of Premier League matches this Sunday.  The opener kicks-off at 9:00a.m. ET with Fullam at Tottenham.  Chelsea and West Ham will battle at 11:30a.m. ET.

Boxing Saturday Night on HBO–  HBO Sports will produce another World Championship Boxing telecast Saturday night at 10:15p.m. ET featuring Timothy Bradley Jr. VS. Ruslan Provodnikov and Jessie Vargas vs. Wale Omotoso.

BTN has Announcement of Big Ten Basketball Awards–  The Big Ten Network (BTN) will have exclusive coverage of the Big Ten basketball awards during the All-Conference Selection Show at 7:00 PM ET Monday, March 11th. Dave Revsine will host the show alongside analyst Jim Jackson.  Revsine, Jackson and Shon Morris host the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament Preview Show at 8:00 PM ET next Wednesday, March 13th.

Friday Night Fights on ESPN–  This week’s edition of Friday Night Nights on ESPN will feature Victor “Mermelada” Cayo and Emanuel “Tranzforma” Taylor in the 10-round main event. Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas have the call with Todd Grisham as pre and post fight host.   Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodriguez will call this week’s fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates (Friday Night Fights) with Leopoldo Gonzalez and Pablo Viruega in the studio. Bilingual reporter Bernardo Osuna will present live interviews and reports for both shows.

Boxing Returns to HBO Saturday Night–  The next installment of World Championship Boxing on HBO takes place this Saturday night from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Tavoris Cloud takes on Bernard Hopkins and Keith Thurman battles Jan Zaveck beginning at 9:30p.m. ET.

CBS Sports Network Goes Behind-the-Scenes of Notre Dame Hoops–  The CBS Sports Network has created another all-access program looking behind-the-scenes at a college program.  The latest, College Hoops Confidential: Notre Dame, premiers Monday at 6:30p.m. ET.  The show will  feature interviews with head coach Mike Brey, and players Jack Cooley and Eric Atkins, among others.

Big Ten Network Looks at the Making of the NCAA Basketball Tournament Bracket–  The Big Ten Network will produce a one hour special looking at the making of  the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament field.  Mike Hall will host Inside the Selection Process this Monday at 9:00p.m. ET.  Hall will Greg Sheehan, who oversaw the tournament for 12 years.

Fox Has Second NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Sunday from Phoenix–  Fox Sports is looking to follow its success from the Daytona 500 into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series second race of the year this Sunday in Phoenix.  Coverage begins at 2:30p.m. ET with Chris Myers, Darrell Waltrip and Michael Waltrip.  Mike Joy will call the race with Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds in the booth.  Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits and Jeff Hammond serves as the network’s roving reporter.

Golf Channel Has Record Viewership in January and February–  The Golf Channel audience continues to grow.  For the months of January and February the Golf Channel had an average audience of 123,000 viewers, up 11% over the same time period last year.  The audience made January and February 2013 the most watched first two months of the year in the history of the network.

ESPN Digital Rates Number One for January–  ESPN reports that its digital media properties accounted for 29% of all sports category usage across digital platforms in January, nearly three times the average audience of No. 2 Yahoo! Sports, and more than the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 sports properties combined.  The numbers were compiled by comScore’s Multi Platform (Beta) data.  For the month ESPN digital properties attracted 62.6 million unique visitors, logging 4.97 billion minutes of usage.

NBC Sports Digital Launches MotorSports Talk–  The digital arm on NBC Sports announced today the creation of a new website devoted to motorsports.  MotorSports Talk joins the other “Talk” pages on NBC Sports.com.  The site will be maintained by the following contributors: Keith Collantine, editor and creator of the F1Fanatic blog; Tony DiZinno, who has written for RACER Magazine and has covered IndyCar and NASCAR since 2006; Luke Smith, creator of the F1 site RichlandF1.com; and writer Christopher Estrada (@estradawriting) who has written for the Boston Globe, FoxSports.com, created the Indy Racing Revolution blog and is a contributor to IndyCar’s IndyCar Nation blog.

Next Sirius XM Radio “Town Hall” will Feature Jeff Gordon and Rick Hendrick–  The next edition of Sirius XM Radio’s “Town Hall” series will feature a fan Q&A with NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick.  The event will take place Thursday, February 21st from Daytona Motor Speedway and can be heard on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio (channel 90 on Sirius and XM Premier).   ESPN analyst and former NASCAR team owner Ray Evernham will moderate the discussion.

Super Bowl XLVII the Focus of final NFL Turning Point–  NBC Sports Network produces its final NFL Turning Point for the 2012 season with a look at the key plays from Super Bowl XLVII.  NFL Turning Point, hosted by Dan Patrick, airs tonight at 10:00p.m. ET.

Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson to Call /Hoosiers Spartans Hoop Game–  ESPN has announced that Dick Vitale and Magic Johnson will serve as analysts with Mike Tirico when the network telecasts the February 19th college basketball match-up between Indiana and Michigan State.  Tip off is 7:00p.m. ET.

BTN Sees Highest January Prime Time Ratings Ever–  The Big Ten Network (BTN) reports that its prime time ratings for the month of January were the highest ever for the network.  BTN’s average primet ime men’s conference basketball rating was 0.87 in the network’s eight metered markets.  Among all national sports networks for the month, BTN trailed only ESPN in its eight metered markets.

Former College QB’s to Compete for Spring Invite on MLB Network Reality Show–  The MLB Network is producing a reality show where former college football quarterbacks John David Booty,Josh Booty, Doug Flutie, David Greene and Ryan Perrilloux will be taught to throw a knuckleball with the possibility of being invited to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Spring Training camp.  Kevin Millar and Tim Wakefield will host The Next Knuckler, which will premiere on February 13th at 9:00p.m. ET.

Actor Wuhl to Host Fantasy Baseball Show on SiriusXM–  SiriusXM Radio announced today that comedian and actor Robert Wuhl will host a new weekly fantasy baseball show on SiriusXM’s 24/7 channel dedicated to fantasy sports.  Off the Wuhl, hosted by Wuhl and Casey Stern, will debut tonight and air live every Wednesday night (9:00-11:00 pm ET / 6:00-8:00 pm PT) on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio (XM channel 87 and Sirius channel 210 with Sirius Premier).

NASCAR Now Returns to ESPN–  With the NASCAR season set to begin soon, so will ESPN’s presentation of its NASCAR Now program.  The seventh season of ESPN2’s news and information program will begin Friday, February 8th, at 3:00 p.m. ET with a program originating from the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.  Allen Bestwick will host the NASCAR Now Hall of Fame program, joined by analysts Dale Jarrett and Ray Evernham.  Mike Massaro, Nicole Briscoe, Marty Reid, Shannon Spake and Bestwick will be ongoing hosts of NASCAR Now again this season, with ESPN SportsCenter anchors Lindsay Czarniak and Jonathan Coachman also occasionally hosting.  Ricky Craven will continue as an analyst for NASCAR Now with regular contributions from Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Evernham and analysts Andy Petree and Brad Daugherty. The daily NASCAR Now show will resume on February 11th.

Rieff Named Anchor of ESPN’s NHRA Coverage–  ESPN announced today that Dave Rieff, who has been a pit reporter on NHRA coverage since 2001, has been promoted to anchor when the season gets underway next week.  Rieff will call the action from the booth with analyst Mike Dunn.  Gary Gerould, John Kernan and Jamie Howe will report from the pits and trackside.

Wild Card Weekend Averages 30 Million Viewers–  The NFL today announced that this past weekend’s Wild Card playoff matches  garnered an average of 30 million viewers, a number seen now for the last three years.  The four games were also the four most-watched games on all of television last week.

Wild Card Weekend Edition of NFL Turning Point Tonight–  The NBC Sports Network will provide a special edition of NFL Turning Point tonight looking back at the action of Wild Card Weekend.  Dan Patrick hosts the program beginning at 9:30p.m. ET and will look back at the key plays in the Seahawks/Redskins, Ravens/Colts, and Bengals/Texans game.

College Hoops Tonight on CBS Sports Network–  The CBS Sports Network will begin its Mountain West Conference coverage tonight as it telecasts UNLV at New Mexico.  Dave Ryan, Steve Lappas, Doug Gottlieb and Allie LaForce call the action beginning at 10:00p.m. ET.

Andy Katz to Host New College Hoops Show on ESPNU–  ESPN announced today the creation of a new college basketball program for ESPNU featuring college basketball reporter Andy Katz.  The weekly Katz Korner will feature interviews with ESPN analysts, coaches and players.  It debuts January 15th at 4:30p.m. ET.

Notah Begay III Joins NBC and the Golf Channel–  NBC Sports announced today that four-time PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III will come on board as an analyst for the network’s golf team on NBC and the Golf Channel.  The 40 year-old Begay begins this week on the Golf Channel’s coverage of the Sony Openin Hawaii

Next in BTN The Journey Series Debuts Sunday–  The Big Ten Network (BTN) will debut the fourth season of it’s The Journey series this Sunday at 8:00p.m. ET.  The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2013 will look at the match-ups in the 2013 Big Ten Basketball season.  The premiere edition will look back at the Nebraska at Michigan State basketball game.
