We are a day early for this week’s edition of Sports Media Weekly.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I spend most of our time looking at the winners of the 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards which were handed out last night in New York.

Ken and I wrap up the news segment examining the success of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on the networks of the NBC Sports Group and plans by Fox to make sports a staple of its Saturday night programming line-up.

Our guest this week is Aaron Goldsmith, new play-by-play voice for the Pawtucket Red Sox.  Goldsmith talks about growing up in St. Louis and being influenced by the great Jack Buck.  He also shares an interesting story featuring another St. Louis broadcasting icon, Bob Costas…

33rd Annual Sports Emmy Nominations Announced

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences today unveiled the nominees for the 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards.  The awards ceremony will take place April 30th in New York City.

More than 170 nominees were announced in 33 categories.  Here is the breakdown as to how many nominations were earned by each network group:

ESPN (ESPN, ESPN 2, ABC, ESPN 3D, espn.com): 55
NBC Sports Group (NBC, Versus, Golf Channel, nbcsports.com):  32
CBS (CBS, Showtime, CBSSports.com):  26
Turner Sports (TNT, TBS, NBA TV, NBA.com, truTV):  22
HBO Sports  :19
FOX Sports Media Group (FOX, SPEED):  16
NFL Network  :12
MLB Network  :8
DIRECTV  :2
MLB Advanced Media (MLB.com, MLBAM):  2
NFL.com  :2
NCAA.com  :1
PGA.com  :1

ESPN got the most nominations with 36, followed by NBC with 22, HBO with 19, and CBS, Fox, and TNT each with 15.  HBO’s 24/7 received the most nominations of any series with 8 while ESPN’s E:60 received 7. 

Last month the Academy announced that Jack Whitaker will be receiving the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
